trying to make hen broody

I have one hen laying right now, Rhode island white, she has been laying for a couple of months but I am trying to get her broody so I put about 6 tennis balls in the nest and along with a real egg, but when she gets in the nest to lay she moves the real egg from the fake and lays on it. can anyone tell me why could she now there fake?

Good luck in 'making her broody'. Some birds, especially hatchery strains, never go broody.

If she's moving the tennis balls out of the way and sitting on the real egg it makes sense. I imagine tennis balls would be uncomfortable for her to sit on because of their size and shape. As for broodiness, it just kind of happens when it happens, and lots of hens never go broody. Giving her optimal nutrition and a stress free environment are about the only things you can do to help, other than having hens of broody breeds like Cochins.

You can't 'make' a hen go broody. It all depends of where you got your bird, what breed she is, and what time of the season. Right now most hens aren't going to go broody as the weather gets colder. And like sourland said. Most hatchery chicken never go broody. Although don't let that discourage you. I had two jersey giants and one white rock go broody and we bought them from a online hatchery so there is def a chance of broodiness. Again broodiness isn't something you can make them do, You'll just have to wait

x2 The tennis balls are way too big for her. I'd suggest putting golf balls in there instead.

I can only assume it is because of a motherly instinct,it also be because of the size of the t balls.try golf balls.im new at it to so maybe we learn trial an error together..good luck
