Trying to put weight on a dog

Thanks for all the advice! I am taking Stanley to the vet this afternoon, then off to the store to buy the ingredients for the satin balls. I will report back what the vet says.

We're back from the vet and she gave Stanley a worm medicine (as a preventative), an antibiotic, and meds for a yeast/fungal skin infection. My question is-where on earth can one find raw wheat germ? We have been all over our town, and have called around as well. We're only able to find toasted wheat germ. Can this be substituted?

Can't help on the wheat germ search, but I just wanted to say thank you for having the dog checked. With the deworming and medications, it will gain weight back easily.

okay, so he has been to the vet. Things I use to put weight on a dog:

Step one, get a digestive enhancer for him. I prefer the one by Nature's Farmacy http://www.naturesfarmacy.com There are several out there to choose from, get a good one and use it on him daily.

Things I use to put weight on a dog:

MEAT!! Feed it raw or if you must, lightly seared in a very hot pan

Ground beef (30% if you can get it)
Ground Turkey
Chicken hearts, gizzards, backs, necks
Beef heart
Beef kidney if you can find it
Liver (use in moderation, liver has a laxative affect on many dogs)

Eggs

Canned fish (use in moderation because of the salt content)
Cottage cheese

Add these ingredients a small amount at a time and build from there.

Good advice Redyre. This is the best suggestion for feeding I have seen on this thread.

If you want your dog to be healthy, feed it meat.

IMO, whole grain cereal, oats, raw wheat germ, oil and molasses have no place in a dog's diet.

If your dog is having a grain allergy reaction to his food, which is my guess, the "Satin Balls" may aggravate his condition.
