My suggestion would be buy the six and choose the best you need and sell the extra chicks on CraigsList.

X 2 - if it's that hard to buy small numbers in your area, you'll probably be able to sell them pretty quickly...and if you wait a few weeks, you can decide which ones you like the best and sell those you don't.

I've been checking CL diligently for coops and chicks for months! Nada.... If I saw more chick postings I might have bought the six at TSC or Country Max and put the others out on CL myself...

seems to me that you are probably NOT the only one looking on CL for one or two chicks, no ads = opportunity knocking. I think you should just buy some chicks and then offer the extras on CL. I bet that by the time the chicks are ready to get out of the brooder you will have resold the extras.
