Hi there!

I need some info from the experts! I’m a new duck mama and I LOVE my duckies. My sister in law has chickens and suggested the bantams to me to try this year too. I wanted some more info on them. Tractor Supply has them as straight-run in my town, but I don’t want roosters. Is there any way to tell whether the babies are hens or roos? If I’m vegetarian, what options might I have if I have a rooster?
Thanks for the help!

I believe My Pet Chicken sells sexed Bantam breeds. I'm not sure exactly how they tell their sex at such a young age unless it's a blood test or something like that. I will be the first one here on BYC's to second the Bantams recommendation because in my personal opinion, they are wonderful! I LOVE Bantams. The ones I got from TSC ended up being 50/50 girls and boys. I really like those birds though.

Why not? Depending on the kind of bantam, and the number of hens vs Roos, they can be great. Especially when they grow up together. And they will protect your little hens, find them food, and keep the peace. I have Japanese bantams, and I have Cochin bantams, and I think that you will be missing out of you don’t want Roos lol.

Might be a neighbor or ordinance issue. Or, since they are vegetarian, and issue with eating fertilized eggs (a religious/moral thing).

But, yes - most roosters are great!
