Morning:

We are picking up our 4 chicks tomorrow (very exciting!) and have a temporary nursery set up in the garage...everything is all warm and cozy in there for them in anticipation!

We have our eye on a small coop for the backyard next to the house. "Farm House Poultry Hutch" Model# 21831H from TSC. The chickens will eventually have the run of our yard but we want a safe, cute little coop for them to roost in. And...something we don't have to build from scratch, we have TOO many other projects on the go at the moment! Saw this coop at the TSC but it wasn't constructed. It looks cute, not overly huge, but the girls will have a nice yard and we will ensure they are safe by enlarging the existing run that is attached to this coop.

Any comments from anyone that has seen this or has actually put one together? Some of the coops we've seen have seen so flimsy but this one seems not too bad...

Thanks

I bought the one from Tractor Supply for $99 on sale (don't know if it's the same model) and it is falling apart at 2 years because the wood was cheap. It is okay to use as place to separate your birds if some are sick, but it is too drafty and small. It will work until you can build a nicer house, but I would use better wood and screws for one. Most people could make one better. If you get it I might keep it under a carport or other roof, or at least put the legs up on bricks to keep them off the ground.

I know of the one, it's displayed in ours. A few concerns the hardware cloth is merely stapled on, likely easily penetrated by a determined predator, plus the actual construction isn't of strength, a concern for being tipped over by predators or even higher winds.

I think the basic design is ok but it doesn't have much room and venting is on the side of lean at best. The window that is just that a window would need better security, it could be punched in.

I do understand the issue of time and building your own, is there anything else available near you?

I did a search for the name of the coop and found that amazon.com sells them, too. There are several consumer reviews there that might be of help to you.

Can't believe that amazon sells coops!
I will shock you one step further I just bought quail hatching eggs from them.

back to the OP post. I tend not to trust these type of coops they are all made in china they are not the greatest quailty
