Called them today and he said that they are going to get cornish rocks on Tuesday. We want eggs.

So, do I wait until the end of the month and go to the only other feed store in town when I know they will have Ameraucanas or, should I stop in TSC on Tuesday to see what they actually got?

Has anyone gotten cornish rocks for eggs and not meat???

That's not a good idea. Cornish Rocks were bred for meat, so they grow incredibly quickly and need a lot of protein. They should be on meat chick starter, which has more protein. Also, few would live to laying age because they get so big, they could get heart attacks and the like because they just grow so fast and so much. Not to mention they would likely lay few eggs.

*nods* That's what I was reading! Seem to me to be pointless if they are dropping dead before they lay! I wonder, though, if I should go down there just to see what they actually end up having. Sometimes the person answering the phone isn't all that knowledgeable about the thing you are asking.

OH No, those things are monsters, they eat and get huge very fast. I have some that are about 3 1/2 weeks old and they are very heavy. I don't think they live long enough to lay many eggs, one rare bird did live 18 months, not sure if she laid many eggs. Be patient, you'l find you some nice layers. Often they die very young of heart failure.

Yeah! Patience pays off. ME, I am oh so NOT patient too, especially with chicks. Those monsters I have are truly huge and you can eat them at this point and get a lot of meat for the size bird. Of course, with that said, you could have bought some and had them butchered in a few weeks.........

and have some great roasted cornish hens! AND egg layers could come later!!! Ah, I am in chicken hatching mode, ignore me I am crazy with it. I watched the video last night on Youtube about the Parents of Cornish Rock Crosses, now I want them too. Just kidding, them really do smell bad. HenZ

Cornish Rocks - not for eggs.

Real Ameraucanas - NOT available at any feedstore.

They have Easter Eggers though.

Now, real Cornish, the purebred type, do indeed lay eggs and can even set eggs for you if you want chicks of your own.

That's what I'm figuring

and since I'm not breeding, I'm ok with EEs. Although, this feed store *only* does chick days for 2 days a year, and has orded in mass quantity 4 different breeds, and seeing as it's not a chain and is privately owned (we're in a ranching community), it wouldn't surprise me if they were real Ameraucanas- will have to ask when I'm down there where they are getting them from, etc.
