So I have Buff Orpingtons and Brahmas but their are a few breeds that I want to get. I want to get Barred Rocks, Americanas(aka Easter Eggers) and Silkies. I'm trying to convince myself not to get Cochins.......but that's not going so well.

Originally I was jsut going to get a couple Americanas and a couple Barred Rocks from TSC. But I kind of want to show the Barred Rocks. Do you think I would get better quality, better bred birds from TSC or Cackle Hatchery??? Also does TSC sex their chicks???Now I don't want to get chickens that are top quality show birds....but you know 4-H quality would be nice.....maybe a few other little shows. And now I'm thinking.....ohhh going to the post office was soooo much fun. But another 15 chickens???? I mean I have the room but.......uggggg

For those of you that have gotten TSC chickens were they healthy, friendly, good???

My suggestion is if you want to show your chickens, you get them from a private breeder. TSC gets their chicks from hatcheries and most hatcheries do not breed their chickens to meet the Perfection of Standards.

I completely agree with what Sonjab314 just said. While that is not to say you won't get an occasional show quality chicken from hatchery stock (it's happened to me) that is not the norm. If you want to show, then you need to start with quality stock from a private breeder. What I would recommend you do is visit the American Poultry Association website and look at the show dates for shows in your area. Then go to that show and meet some breeders, talk with them and see how their birds are placing in the show. Let them know what you want and be prepared to part with some cash. Exhibition stock is an investment in your showing career and your future breeding program and well worth the price. Plan on anywhere from $20-$50 (sometimes more) for an exhibition bird. Most breeders give 4-H prices for 4-Hers to get kids onto the right track. Don't get discouraged if you can't find a breeders birds you like or the breeders that are at the show don't have what you want at the show with them. They may have what you want at home and you can plan a meet up to get the bird you want. Take your time to get a good bird. It will more then pay for itself in the long run and get you off on a good start to a fun and successful show career.

I think it really depends. TSC doesn't sex their birds as far as I know. I got my white bearded silkie hen from TSC 2 years ago. She's at the fair right now and won Best of Variety. She's not the best show bird, but not the worst either.

Depending on where you are TSC's birds may have come from Cackle. So if thats the case and you want only a few try TSC. Most feed store will have a pullet bin. For showing I say find a private breeder.

Talk to your Tractor Supply to see which hatchery they get their chicks from and what your options are. Different Tractor Supplies get their chicks from different hatcheries. I can tell you where mine gets them, but I have no idea where your's gets them. Some Tractor Supply's will order specific chicks for you and some will not. If I order through mine, I have to order a minimum of 25 and they are delivered by mail to my address. Not much help.

What options you have to get chicks will be different at your Tractor Supply. Mine puts all red chicks in one tub (not just sex links, all red chicks), bantam in another, and all others in a third. Makes absolutely no sense to me, but that is the way they do it. What I am getting at is that each Tractor Supply does it differently. If you talk to them, you can find out what your options are. And you may need to search around for someone that actually knows what they are talking about. Some employees do, but some don't.

Hatcheries do select their breeders to the Standard of Perfection. But instead of keeping one specific rooster with one or two specific hens, they keep several roosters with a lot of hens so the controls are not as tight as with some breeders. Your chicks are not as likely to be show quality. Also, even the best breeders hatch out a lot of chicks and reject most as far as showing them or breeding them. You don't always get grand champion, perfect Standard of Perfection chickens from even the good breeders.

Not all breeders have the same expertise or goals. For example, some breed Welsummers to win grand championships at shows. Some breed them to win grand championships and lay dark eggs. Some breed them to lay dark eggs, not win championships. Some people order hatchery chicks, breed them without a copy of the SOP around, and sell those as Welsummers.

If you can find a breeder that knows what they are doing and is breeding toward the goals you want, you can get great chicks. Their worst culls are almost certainly going to be better than almost all hatchery chicks.

I don't know what the categories are in the shows you are talking about. Many county fairs have categories for 4-Her's to show about any chicken, even a sex link. But some shows are very strick about which birds can be shown. For any of them, check ahead of time the medical requirements. Most require certain testing.

Not fully understandng your goals and plans, I would suggest trying to fine a breeder in your area that produces show-quality BR and get a few from them to show. You can get the rest from Tractor Supply.

Good luck!

I have to disagree with hatcheries selecting their breeders per the Standard of Perfection.......they're interested in quantity, not quality.

I would go to the TSC get some cochins (great brooders) and your orps, brahmas, and and Easter eggers there. Then I would find a local barred rock breeder and get them from him/her. Then you will have your production flock, and your show flock.

Be absolutely certain you can identify the breeds of baby chicks correctly if you get them at TSC. I had raised barred rocks and thought that was what I was getting. I certainly questioned the quality as they got older but when they started laying white eggs I did dectective work to find out I had California Grays instead. I did not realize many babies looked similar and the folks at TSC didn't really know what they had. Ironically the young lady there did actually help me sex them and I wound up with mostly hens which was what I wanted.
