Tube Feeding

That all makes sense and Sleepea's weight looks pretty good for one that's three weeks old. If she/he is getting better they'll weigh more today. What I've noticed is that a chick gains 7-10% of it's body weight per day starting at about day 5-7.

I'm the type that takes 2 pills when the bottle says 1 or 2, so of course I would use no less than 3/4 teaspoon powder in my 1/2 gallon of Corid water, but that's just the way I am, lol.

Amount of Amprolium (Corid or Amprol) powder per 1/4 teaspoon
  • One 1/4 teaspoon = 135 mg
  • 1/2 teaspoon = 270 mg
  • 3/4 teaspoon =405 mg
  • 1 teaspoon = 540 mg
  • 1 & 1/4 teaspoons = 675 mg
  • 1 & 1/2 teaspoons = 810 mg
  • 1 & 3/4 teaspoons = 945 mg
  • 2 teaspoons= 1080 mg

Here is what's in 1-10ml of the liquid
  • 1ml = 96mg
  • 2ml = 192mg
  • 3ml = 288mg
  • 4ml = 384mg
  • 5ml = 480mg
  • 6ml = 576mg
  • 7ml = 672mg
  • 8ml = 768mg
  • 9ml = 864mg
  • 10ml = 960mg

The poop pictured looks like cecal poop and looks okay, but I'd be tempted to place a pile on a paper towel and double check it for evidence of blood. Not saying i think there is blood in it, just that sometimes you won't see any unless you place a pile on the towel and let it sit for several minutes.

These are what I consider to be normal in chicks that are eating crumbles.

Thank you, I will up the dosage today! Sleepeas weight is down four grams from yesterday. Going to tube feed again, how many ml of feed should I give it? Yesterday we gave eight and I was a bit concerned it would come up and choke it if given too much.

If you aren't already, you should mix the crumbles with medicated water, that's what I would do. As for amount, I start by putting a small amount in, like 5ml, feel the crop, if flat or concave, give more, repeat until I feel the crop is slightly convex. Repeat this as often as you can as long as the crop is clearing. If any vomiting or regurgitation occurs, reduce volume. Do you have a Petsmart or Petco nearby? If so, I strongly suggest buying some Kaytee Baby Bird Food, It's soooo much easier to tube, especially with a size 16 or 18 french tube.

Yes that is what we did, we mixed the crumbles, egg, vitamins, and Corid water into a slightly runny paste that would go through the catheter. The closest store like that is about 75 miles away, we will get a few more things to have on hand next time we go to the city.

Sleepea is eating well today, not the piranha the rest of them are in that pen but eating on its own. I weighed the other two from that hatch and Sleepea is about 100 gm lighter than the rest. We will keep weighing morning and evening to insure that the weight is climbing, if not we will tube.

Thanks again for your help.

Sleepea is eating and acting pretty much normal again. Weight is up to 220 gm, that is an increase of 26 gm from its low two days ago. I am pretty sure that it was suffering from cocci and the Corid kicked in just in time.

Odd thing happened yesterday, in the small brooder Sleepea is in with its two hatchmates, four weeks old, two more hatchmates at five weeks old, and Sweepea who is at seven or eight weeks old. We were out feeding all the wee ones in the garage and heard a lot of commotion in Sweepeas brooder. I finished with the feeding of the one day old peas and walked over to see what was going on. Those crazy chicks had Sweepea down and were viciously attacking her!

Sweepeas right eye was bleeding and she was squealing with pain. We put some Neosporin on her wound and then into isolation, she is fine today but wow were they vicious to her, guess I will never know what caused that. I would have thought that they would have picked on the weaker chick Sleepea since it was sick and down. It's always something. Which reminds me I need to update you on the Respiratory Problem thread, the never ending story.....

Kat did you take this photo? if so what are the transparent looking stuff? at first i thought it was feed but my feed is not transparent even when it is wet could this be larvae?

Yes, I took that and I guess I should have said that the stuff on it is turkey crumbles. No possible way it could be larvae as it's from indoor brooders and it had just been pooped when I picked it up. :D -Kathy
