Hey there!
My name is Sam. I live in Tucson AZ and I am just starting my very own backyard chicken flock. After a month of convincing DH that chickens are a wonderful idea, he agreed only if I could keep the start-up under $100. Talk about tricky!
I built my own coop and chicken run from pallet wood and a few old scraps we had in the backyard from other projects. I bought a leftover roll of chicken wire off craigslist, and then found some chickens! I would LIKE to work up to raising my own from chicks and eventually eggs, but for now I'm content taking in a few old breeder cast offs. I know this is a little risky, I've only got two or my six are laying for SURE, but I would still consider this the transition period.
I've got 2 blue laced red wyandottes, a buff brahma, a black jersey giant, a barred rock, and an ameracauna. I love learning all their personalities! I'm hoping that I can eventually teach them to like us, as of now they run for their lives if anyone comes too near.
They all get let out in the afternoon for a couple hours to explore and scratch around and then one usually decides it's bedtime and they all follow her back into their coop.
I look forward to learning all I can and loving and enjoying my new chickens!
Sam
