Tucson newbie

Good evening. I joined BYC so I can learn from those who have been raising chickens in AZ. Im used to Oregon and typical small farms for raising chickens. I have a decent sized backyard and Im ready to start my new flock of chickies next Spring. Im trying to decide on the coop and run right now. My biggest obstacle is trying to decide if I need an air conditioner in the coop. I have experience of raising and training chickens in rural small farm settings, but not city. I have a 15 yo son and 2 dogs. I also work full time. I'm up to speed on the city ordinances for the flock. I welcome any suggestions and advice!

I am in a tropical area of Australia and do not have air conditioning in the coop; just lots of ventilation.

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

Including your general location on your profile will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock or other critters, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out

It would be a great idea if you joined your state thread. Then you can pick the brains of chicken folks who put up with the weather conditions. They can best tell you what type of coop to build, what breeds tolerate the intense heat best. Also they can give you advice on what they do to get their flocks through the heat.
