This year I'm hatching Tufted Rumpless Araucanas. I have 3 sets eggs (from 3 different breeders) going in during the next week so I'd like to document my observations of the eggs, the hatching, and the different sources. There are 2 other breeders that I'm aware of that are selling eggs but I can't afford one and the other I hatched out last year and I'll include some comparison info on that experience a little later. I'm also on a preorder list for 18 eggs that won't arrive until around July so that info will have to be added later.

Since I'm really interested in this breed I am hoping to find a beautiful bird and a beautiful egg in one!
Here is what I'll be detailing.
1. Number of eggs ordered, number of intact eggs recieved.
2. Cost per egg
3. Size and color of eggs as they compare to eachother
4. Number of eggs hatched (compared to number of fertile eggs recieved)
5. Number of chicks with single tufts, double tufts, rumpless and tailed.
6. Gender ratio of chicks (just for kicks)

I may or may not include stuff about my interaction with the breeders themselves... but this isn't really a personality contest... just info about what's out there, and who I'd order from again to build an Araucana flock. Some people might not care about birds charactaristics as long as the egg is beautiful and other's might feel the opposite. I'm looking for both since I want the blue egg color for my basket AND I want my kids to have a chance of winning at the fair!

The first box of eggs arrived today.
"The Missouri Batch"

Number of eggs - I won 10+ on eBay but actually recieved 12 (none broken)
Auction Price - $26.00 + 13.50 shipping= $39.50 total / 12 eggs = $3.29 per egg
Egg Color/Size - I would call these eggs 'pale mint' in color. I've put them next to a grocery store Lrg and they are smaller, my observation says somewhere between a small and med grocery store egg. The sizes are very close to uniform throughout the whole dozen.
Flock Description - "All but two of our laying flock is tailess and about 50% are tailess and tufted."
Thoughts - This seemed like a nice combo of tufted v. clean-faced given the lethality of the tufted gene.
We will not be too hard on hatch rates given that the eggs are shipped and that we expect to lose 25% of developing chicks in the shells. For this hatch I'm hoping for 6 chicks alive and well. We'll see how it goes.

These eggs were packed very well and there was a reciept, a card, and an NPIP number along with it all. Very professional and very thorough. Shipped from Missouri on Monday and arrived in PA on Wednesday. This seller had excellent communication and was very quick to answer emails. He was also willing to combine shipping and from all appearances he runs a very tight ship.

One egg has been replaced by a large white egg for size reference.

*I pledge to refrain from using the word 'egg' in larger words were it doesn't already exist. e.g. Eggsist, Eggcellent, Eggxactly, eggcetera.

I won't even use Eggvaluator to describe what I'm doing in this thread. Whatever you choose to write in your replys to the thread is up to you!

Checking to see how hatching went. If you have anymore observations.

I ordered several hatching eggs from different breeders. Only one set hatched. 4 out of twelve, and none were tufted, 1 has a tail.

Fortunately I have tufted roos already so I am getting tufted chicks. I had hoped to get one from hatching eggs, but live and learn.
