I started back into raising chickens in Tulsa recently and I made the mistake of purchasing some layers from some ranch in Arkansas and they brought with them a cold which killed 12 of my hens. I gave all of them some supplements that I purchased that Atwoods and right now the ones that have survived are looking well. I also have 4 3-4 month old red sex pullets that I have kept separated from the other hens. I have two questions. 1) If the older hens (1-2 years) are not showing any more signs of a cold will they start laying again and can their eggs be consumed? 2) How long should I wait before introducing the pullets to the rest of the flock?

Welcome to Backyardchickens.com aka BYC! :frow
:yesss:We are glad you joined our flock.
Jump right in and make yourself at home.
Chickens don't get colds they get diseases.
The ones that survived should start laying again.
What supplements did you give them?

Basically when chickens get sick they either die or survive.
They are usually carriers of the disease for life but that doesn't mean you can't eat their eggs. They can spread the disease to you new future chickens though.

Can I ask...what were their exact symptoms, the ones you lost?

Hi and welcome to BYC. Personally, I'd cull your flock and begin again. Some respiratory diseases can be a PITA and are best avoiding, rather than having to manage them, imo.

Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Greetings and welcome back to BYC! So glad you rejoined us. Been a very long time! Sorry that you lost birds. Typically it's not a cold but disease. There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. Old folks like me :old will never remember from this thread. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!
