I have had chickens for about 5 years and I have never seen this before. At first I thought it was a feather cyst, but after soaking/warm compress and trimming the feathers around it I’m not so sure. Anyone out there know what this is?
We found it about 3 days ago and yesterday was the first day I got a real good look at it after cleaning up the area, it was caked with feathers. It oozes blood/clear yellow liquid. She’s eating and drinking ok, even though she is a little lethargic (I think from the traumatic soak. I’ve added electrolytes to her water and I’ve been spraying the area with Vetericyn for poultry. Is there anything else I can do?
TIA!!

It's a first for me also, never seen anything quite like it. How old is she, and was she acting normally before the soak? I'm sorry I have nothing to add at this point, will be watching to see if you get some helpful answers.

**EDIT** Wondering if this could be a hernia of some kind, even umbilicus.

Is this cyst soft or firm, or does it feel like it is full of fluid? Is it over the breast bone or belly? I have never seen something like that in my chickens. Breast blisters over the Keel bone are common, but this looks different.

It’s soft. It feels like it’s full of fluid and it oozes a bit. It’s on her side, below the breast.

She is about 8 weeks, her down feathers are almost all the way gone. She seemed to be acting normally, maybe a little more standoffish than the other chickens and now I understand why. I thought it was because she was the smallest of the flock. Thank you so much!

Seconded on the possibility of a hernia. Any known trauma? Do the margins of the mass originate from her skin? Is it painful? Reducible like a hernia would be? Sometimes ruminants will have herniated items that form an external abcess, like a piece of wire or whatever that exits the GI tract and goes for a trip around the abdomen and sometimes tries to leave through the body wall... Not sure if birds can do the same...

If this was a hernia, it might be strangulated from the deep reddish purple color. That would be if bowel were trapped inside the hernia. Is the chick pooping normally or eating and drinking? Please let us know what it is if you see a vet.

No known trauma. It seems like it does originate from the skin, but I’m not certain. She peeps a bit I’m holding her in a strange position, but when I was cleaning her up it didn’t seem to bother her too much.
Thanks, I’ll definitely look into it!
