Hi, I just noticed a tumor (or something) on the back of the neck of a 2.5 month old orpington. I don't know anything about this. I certainly don't know what to do about it. I of course jump to the conclusion of mareks. (Isnt that what any chicken keeper would do? Jump to the worst possible conclusion?!) I took some pictures and Im asking for any ifo you may have about what it is and what I do about it.

Thanks!

Almost looks like an infected feather follicle. I've lost 40 chickens to Marek's and have never seen anything that looked like that on any of the...so, I would say you are safe from that disease.

I don't know if chickens get infected feather follicles but, it stands to reason that they could. I would put neosporin on the area for a few days and see what happens!

Good luck :)

Did you find out what this was? My black cochin has the same thing. Hers is larger and she seems to be weak and not walking well either. She's my sweetest girl so I'd hate for the worst to happen. Thanks for letting us know what came of this!

Did you ever figure out what this was? My chicken seems to have the same thing and I am desperately trying to figure out what it is....

I found something like that on my chicken a few days ago, but it was much much larger, prob around 3-5 cm in diameter. Turns out it was actually a tumor. Vets arent that accessible to our area so we had no choice but to try to take our the tumor ourselves (with the guidance of a vet cousin of mine through a video call). We gave him some amoxicillin after the "surgery" and he's currently still recovering, but he now seems less weaker than he was before (the weight of the tumor probably made him super uncomfortable too). Unfortunately, I don't think we were able to remove all of the tumor, so we're worried about it reappearing again.
