Turkenstein25's Turkey Talk for 2015

Whatever it was, it took the time to nibble the tiniest bits of flesh from the surfaces it could reach. That, to me, would indicate either a crow worked it over extensively after the first predator was done, or that whatever it was, wasn't big enough to flip the carcass over, so something smaller like a weasel or aerial predator.

A turkey puts up a pretty good fight as long as it's in the fight, so I'd guess a surprise aerial attack. Sorry about your turkey.

Well we had the first one hatch this morning a day early and we have one more piping that we can tell.
I am hoping for a successful hatch!

3 of my chocolate eggs were external pipped this morning.

Hoping for babies in bator when I get home from work tonight.

last year was my first year hatching and raising baby turkeys. my goal has always been to have a flock of wild turkeys or at least turkeys that look wild. last year I had a "bronze" tom and a royal palm hen. she started setting and something killed her and busted several eggs in the process. there were 6 eggs left so i rushed them to the incubator. 5 hatched. 4 lived to maturity. sold 3 and kept the tamest hen which is a light brown color. i got 21 eggs shipped to me last year that were pure narragansett and rio eggs. i only had 2 out of those hatch. i now have a half bronze, half eastern tom, the mix hen, a narragansett hen, and a rio hen. the only hen not laying is the rio as she is slower maturing and was hatched late last year. i set several eggs from them in the incubator on thursday. got some more eggs from a friend that will be royal palm on friday. then got 30 more rio eggs from the same lady from last year on saturday. so i have 74 eggs in two incubators. hopefully i have a better hatch than last year on the rio eggs. also really wanting to get some poults out of my new tom as he is half eastern and has 3 beards! want those genetics! if any of you all have any references on beard genetics id be greatly appreciative.

Ok.... I have another question. Our
turkeys are laying eggs in our pasture. However a couple of turkeys have been jumping our fence and laying their eggs near the creek where there is good cover. The problem is something has been eating those eggs and a couple days ago kill the turkey pictured below.
We have foxes, coyotes, raccoons, weasels, skunks and aerial predators. I am Not sure what killed this turkey because I think a Fox would have eaten more of the meat and it seems like something stripped much of the meat around the neck and the guts but did not necessarily strip the breasts off like I would assume a bigger predator would. Does anyone have any idea what could have killed this turkey? Could a raccoon or skunk really kill a turkey?

O my

Got home from work.

3 chocolates hatched.

3 more pipped.

Last 4 didn't have much hope for when I locked down but did give em a chance.

Will let them go til 3 pipped hopefully hatch then call it a hatch. If I get 6 will be best hatch of year so far.

Hatching is exciting and frustrating.

But wouldn't know how I would not do it. As long as I have birds.

Got home tonight.

All 6 of my eggs that had good movement had hatched.

So 6 new chocolate turkey babies.

This is variety I wanted to expand my flock with.

Best hatch percentage of year so far.
