turkey behaviour

If you leave the gobbler in the nesting pen be sure to put some cover around and over the nest or you may have problems with the tom smashing the eggs by trying to mount the hen when she sits on the nest. A sitting hen tells a tom it's romancing time.

Makes since!! He is quite the clutzy tom! This is our first, so really don't have a clue! The only time I saw him strut was the day we moved them to the "love nest". It was quite a sight! She likes to preen and he was afraid, due, I think, to lack of sight and a few dominant chickens in there

Since then, he has calmed down.
we do have the nest surrounded by brush with a small "inlet" for her.
She hasn't started laying yet, so hopefully she will figure it out when she is ready.
We have 4 baby "whites" in the brooder and 3 BB Burbons on the way home as I type...so, I think we will get to figure this out as we go

Thanks again, keep the info comming!

We have 2 blue slate toms and a royal palm hen, the hen is in love with my husband and when he sits down outside she STRUTS around him!! She will come up and sit on his lap and coo and purr like a dog in heat, its ridiculous!! The toms just now started to mount her and stuff but she still prefers my hubby, its sooooo funny!! I actually have a pic of her strutting to my hubby on my cell phone, I will download it and show you guys!!!

Oh, we so need to see that!!

It was the chickens doing that to my DH when we figured out what they were doing! It is too funny! Poor guy, he is SO outnumbered now!!

Just a heads up:

A HOT HEN (literally):

A `Shameless hussy' hen, but safe for the grandkids to be around. Our granddaughter calls her `purr bird' (pretty close to the sound - more like a `cat motor' to my ears). I call her other things when she gets serious and just starts up with that lonely sounding whoot, whoot, whoot as she heads off into the woods like a thing possesed, to find the most coon filled hollow to start laying her eggs in (is then given no option but a predator proof nest).

That first one does look like a Royal Palm tom!!
ivan3 - that is a beautiful Slate. That is what we have and she does the same thing! Is your male without spots?? Our's is. I know they can throw grey, black, or white, but I am curious if they can also throw mixed?

They sure are ALL beautiful birds!!

DH came home with 3 beautiful Burbon turkeys yesterday! We are already mentally expanding the coop!!

The guy at the store had a different way to tell if the chicks are male or female...anybody ever heard of the "blow on the anus area" method???

I think I am good just waiting and seeing what we got

Well, that is what DH said the guy did...I do believe it was from a distance...we haven't tried it ourselves

I think I will stick with the "hold them by the feet" till we can tell if it works or not!!
