Hi Backyard Chickens Forum

I have a turkey - not sure how old - could be quite old who can't walk. It was walking in a drunk way so I bought it inside for a while and gave it some supplements and wormers etc and it came good so I put it back outside again. Then it was doing the drunk walking again and so I brought it back in. It went down hill very quickly, and it's neck went limp and that night I thought it would die - but that was several nights ago and since then I've been giving it coconut water and it's got much better but still can't walk. It can flutter it's wings no problem and seems sprightly besides. I thought it might of had a stroke, but I just want to ensure it's not a nutritional deficiency or something simple like that. I've given it magnesium and multi-vitamins and also vit B.

Many thanks.

Is it a heritage or broad breasted turkey?

Vitamins/minerals, bird wormers etc
Be very careful giving too many different things at the same time. You can stress the turkey out enough to kill it.

I believe that what @nuthatched is asking is what specific supplements and wormers. Just saying you are giving "Vitamins/minerals, bird wormers etc" doesn't tell us anything.

I've given B12, Mg Glutonate and multi-vitamins. Does anyone know of a particular nutrient deficiency that could be the cause of this?

In my opinion it is a waste of time to give vitamin B12. If you want to give B, give vitamin B complex which has the niacin and thiamine that they need in addition to B12.

Loss of muscle control can be due to a calcium deficiency in laying hens.

Inability to stand up can be due to heart and weight issues in broad breasted turkeys and diet.

What are the specific wormers you have given?

Hi there

I meant vit B complex.

This turkey isn't laying eggs - I'm not sure what sex it is but it's never laid eggs since I've had it over 3 years.

It's not overweight - but I guess due to age it might have a weak heart.

I don't think it has worms so the wormer was just to cover off on that - this would be a wormer for chickens and birds that covers on on the common worms. I also gave it coccidius medicine in case that was the problem.

Many thanks.

Giving Corid to a turkey at the same time you are giving vitamin B complex is counter productive. Corid is a thiamine blocker. Vitamin B complex contains the thiamine that both the turkey and the coccidia need.

Don't give both at the same time.
