Turkey crisis--HELP!! WARNING: GRAPHIC PICS--Update

Animals are tough, as long as you can keep infection away,as ugly as it is, it will probably heal. I have seen people wounds like that in combat situations and ws told infection was the biggest enemy....keep it clean and good luck.

Things are healing nicely, although it still looks kind of ugly. I got all the stitches out. The right side is healing nicely, but the left side opened again. She's going to be somewhat scarred on that side, but at least it will be hidden by her wing and feathers.

Wow, the update pics really show alot of healing. Very nice job you're doing.
My drug of choice is always betadine. Kills everything and promotes healing. But I think they all work. Whatever you're doing, keep it up, she looks good. -karen

Actually, I haven't done anything for nearly a week. She's been outside, and when I took the last of her stitches out today, I could tell she'd dusted. I had used LOTS of betadine on her when I was cleaning her up and stitching her, so I was hopeful that it would help kill any potential infection. Obviously, it helped!

Well, she's completely healed, with very little trace of anything ever happening to her. After the inital wounds, she got caught again and he did even worse, so I stuck her in the kennel with my Polish pair and did not let her out. At one point I had to pull all the old scabs off to allow the wounds to breathe, especially since they had come loose at the edges and were very hard, and one scab got trapped under a bridged piece of scar tissue, so I had to nick it to free it. Once those were gone, it was like they healed up overnight. I checked her two days ago, and there was no trace of any scabs, and the feathers are growing back in. I let her out, and she's rejoined the flock without much notice.

I now have in my possession, thanks to my2pets, two turkey saddles. When I get home, I'll have to figure out how to catch her again and put it on. I'll have to out at night and catch her roosting, which is no fun getting beat in the head in the dark by a 15 lb. bird!

It looks like a classic dog bite to me. I didn't read the whole post, but some antibiotics would be helpful if it appears to be infected at all (pink ring around the stitches, possibly warm to the touch).

BLISS - What a wonder recovery for her...

I have not raised turkeys...

I was wondering if turkeys have nasty spurs like roosters and if they can be cut back???? and what about their nails are they hard to clip..

Was the nails/spurs the cause of so much damage???
:)
