Turkey eggs

she is free range and gets locked up at night. But she doesnt leave the building.. ever. I can run her out but she comes right back inside.. she is a bourbon and the male is a royal palm. I have seen them mate one time but didnt see the actual deed. He got on top of her and stood there for over half an hour but finally got down and walked away. I should add maybe that when I bought her, I was looking for a male and they sold me this one. I have bought from them before and trust them but she did look like a male.. I kept thinking she didnt look like she was developing correctly and finally she laid an egg.. from the roost. Many times tho she does it on the floor but at any random spot. I cant help but think she is maaybe laying and maybe made a nest, but since she never has before, I am afraid to hope. Would love to find th nest if it exists because I dont want any babies and she cant stay out at night for her safety... although she is pretty worthless as far as poultry goes... but I am attached and dont want anything to happen to her. but I collect all the eggs.. goose that is and blow them out and save the shells and would like to add to the turkey collection.

would you know, some of my eggs have started to hatch, and the mom has done all the work,my question is how long does it take for all the eggs to hatch she has 17 under her,5 have hatched,so far,so im wondering, will my hen kick out the eggs that don't hatch or do I need to candle them an take them out my self

I think turkey eggs take 28 days?? Not 100 % sure tho. I would say she will stay with the the nest for a few days after they hatch but will abandon it to take the babies to feed, so you will have to be ready to either take over with a place to put the remaining eggs or let them go. That is the trouble with staggered hatches. I have a hen setting now and she started with 9 eggs and I was not paying attention and when I looked again she had 21 eggs. All in various stages of development. I got it all sorted out and now check every day to keep the excess out.

thank you this helps, should i try to incubate what doesnt hatch for a couple days or just throw them out,

i have a question my hen was sitting on eggs about 15 anyway i sold some and left her 9, 4 hatched she sat for a few days more 1 more hatched she got up left the nest,so i noticed he was'nt sitting no more so i took eggs that was left, any way i decided to candle eggs see what was going on an noticed there was still life so i put in an incubator, now the babies are 8 days old an the ones in incubator still have'nt hatched,i was under the impression that all would hatch around the same time,i have candled them but it looks like they still have a ways to go,before ready,is this normal,

i am in that situation now,an as i have candled there is still life so i have incubated, not sure how long till they are ready but it looks like about a week an a half,

This is the trouble with birds. I have been on vacation for a week and now I have chickens sitting on eggs, all different starting times and some turkey eggs. Just went out and checked them and one next with fictive chicken and two turkey eggswere abandoned. Cold but I stuck them under another chicken and hope they are not dead. Chicken lacked a week and turkey were set on the sixth... Probably dead, but worth a shot. The chicken had got up and moved to a next door nest and was on two fresh laid eggs... Aaarrgghhhhh

That was my problem so now I've decided not to let my turkey hens set on eggs. If they would just go broody and incubate their own nests instead of switching back and forth or letting other hens add to their nest, so many are left unhatched that way.

ill tell what happen to me i have three turkey hens only two lay one isn't old enough yet,but i have a royal palm an a red bourbon an so Helen royal,is sitting on eggs but when she gets up to stretch Tilly bourbon, goes sits lays gets off.next day same thing,Helen had already gone broody,so before i new it there was like twenty eight eggs under Helen,Helen is still sitting but then a raccoon got in an tore up the nest eggs was every where,i managed to save 12 the rest was broken,or pulled out the back of the coop, eaten i wasn't sure sure any was still alive so i candled them yesterday saw some life in a couple didn't candle all,Helen don't like to be bugged,so we'll see what we get ,my male got pretty tore up to an now doesn't want to go out since the coop, into the fenced aria
