turkey food and chicken food

Hi, -brand new to hatching turkeys and raising them.
I don't have them yet, but trying to get ready mentally and physically

FYI, I don't eat my birds, just the eggs.

Can chicken and turkeys eat the same food?
Can they stay in the same house?
do turkeys roost like hens?

I don't know the answers absolutely. YOu can do a search through these other posts. I will try to answer the way I remember reading from here.


Can chicken and turkeys eat the same food? Turkeys need a higher protein diet. I am not sure the percentages. I bought my poults the meat bird crumbles.

Can they stay in the same house? I think the general concensus as yes. But there are some disease that are spread between the two. Education is key.

do turkeys roost like hens? Haven't seen this one asked. I think they like to be pretty high to roast if possible. Everything I have read says you have to have a cover over your pen or the turkey will fly out (not so much with chickens).

I'm not an expert by any means, just have two pet turkeys.

Can chicken and turkeys eat the same food? I've been told that Turkey's need the food with higher protein but mine just eat layer pellets. I bought my tom from someone and that is what he fed them as well.

Can they stay in the same house? they can stay in the same house but I guess they can catch a disease from chickens.

do turkeys roost like hens? The heritage birds will roost but not the broad breasted ones because they are too heavy to get up on the roost.

Game bird starter (28-30% protein) is what we're going to feed our poults shortly, and chicks get Purina Start and Grow (18%). Once they join the free-ranging adult flock, everyone gets Purina Flock Raiser (20%) and free-choice oyster shell grit.
