I just took in a female turkey who is about 2 years old. She has been laying eggs but not since I've had her...I got her on Saturday. Last night she started to lay. I have chickens and am not familiar with how turkeys do it or how long it takes. You can see the egg hanging and it's surrounded by red membrane. It's not bloody. There is fluid leaking and dripping. She seems to be in no pain and walking around. It was this way last night about 8:00 and still the same now at 10:00 a.m. Should I assist? Do I let her be? You can see the egg hanging. I'm just worried it will get backed up inside her and she will die...I had this happen to a few chickens over the years. I don't know if she is stressed being in her new environment...but with all this going on she is still happy.

Well we put her in warm water for about 30 mins. That relaxed her and we were able to get the egg out....most disgusting thing I've ever had to do...but that comes with owning animals! She seems fine but the canal or membrane/wall, whatever it's called is still hanging. It's not as low as it was but still dangling and drippy. We washed and rinsed the area with warm soapy water. She seems fine. She's eating and walking around now. we felt around and didn't not feel any more eggs backed up. Hoping she recovers. I would hate that she lived this long to come to my home to die.

It somewhat looks like the pic in your link...but not quite as bad. I just checked her and it seems to be going up on its own and she seems perfectly fine. Thanks for the link.

Use gloved hand with just a bit of veg. oil to push tissue back into body if eversion doesn't otherwise resolve on its own (would eventually dry in air and start to decompose).

When tissue is back in place, put hen in darkened area (just enough light to see food and water) for a couple of days (break the light/dark - egg laying schedule - give the area a chance to tighten up). This often doesn't work but is the best bet.
