Hi all! I have a 7 year old turkey hen that I’m considering euthanizing as she is in quite a bit of pain. However, I want to make sure there’s nothing else that I can do before I do so. Her feet are very inflamed(the left more so) and her middle toe of her right foot bends like this as she bears all of her weight on it. It’s been like this for some time now, but it has gotten increasingly worse recently. She still has spunk but struggles to get around. I don’t want to keep her around for my own benefit, I just want to do what’s most humane. Do any turkey experts out there have any advice as to what I could possibly do to help her.

Look on the bottom of her feet, do you see any large black round scabs by chance? It could be bumble foot. Photos of the bottom of her feet would be helpful as well.
As for the crooked toes, I would start by bracing them to straiten then out. You can use cardboard and vet wrap to make braces, or even order braces from a seller on Etsy that 3D prints them. For such a sever case I would probably order braces.

They're really good for sprains and other injures you may encounter as well.
I hope there is something we can do. You can also give her half a baby aspirin for pain. To give it to her, sit her between your legs so you can squeeze her and hold her still. Then pinch the corners of her mouth to get her to open, and pop the pill down her throat. I've used a normal Aspirin with no issues as well.
I'm sorry you're going through this, I really hope we can help you figure out what's going on.

I am so sorry. She looks like she is in a great deal of pain. :hugs:hit

Is a vet an option?

What is this?

I was wondering about that myself. To me, it looks like she's been walking on her hocks to escape the pain. Now maybe they're swollen, bruised, and scabby?
That hock there is the one above the worse foot, which would make sense why its the most swollen?

The hen appears to be a broad breasted turkey and at 7 years old is very fortunate to still be alive. My guess is gout due to too much protein in the diet.

While taping feet into proper orientations may be effective on young poultry, I do not recommend it for older turkeys whose bones are already becoming brittle..
