Hello all,
I am a complete newbie, both to posting and to turkeys, so please bear with me.
We got 6 turkey poults (day-olds) this summer (June 22), and within a few days, I noticed that one of them was having trouble voiding. I thought it was pasty butt and researched on this forum what to do and followed all the recommendations (daily cleansing, molasses in the water, probiotics and I even gave her some of my son's PEG 3350 which helps the pooping process).
Anyway, she seemed fine for over a month or so. But over the past couple of weeks, I have noticed that she is having a lot of trouble again. She is much smaller and not as mature as the others. She often does her own thing while the others seem to travel as a pack, but she is not picked on by the others. A few days ago, her back end was the size of a grapefruit, so armed with a little tub, cloth, rubber gloves and a box of Q-tips, out I went to free her from her stool. I massaged, squeezed, prodded and by the end of our little session we had accumulated a small mountain of green-ish, poop, quite dry, but certainly not hard. Today I noticed her (with quite a formidable booty) straining again, with no luck, so we were back at it again. Yet another fine collection of the above mentioned poop.
I tried to give her some yogourt which she turned up her nose at....the rest of them loved it. We have been giving them our fruit and veggies compost and they are on turkey pellets 22% protein and a hanging watering system, so they get fresh water. They have a good-sized yard with some sand and lots of grass, weeds, straw and whatever bugs they can track down.
What can I do, to make the final few months of Lulu's life a little more comfortable? (We always referred to her as 'Bum Problem', but my 5 year old daughter thought she deserved a more dignified name considering all that she has to go through!)
