turkey orders for Thanksgiving questions...

my husband just asked if i want to get turkeys for next season, i resounded with a big, OH YEAH!

we figured they would make great food, income and gifts. bring it on!

gobble gobble ain't the sound of your turkey, it's the sound of me eating my turkey!

I get $3/lb for my chickens, so I was kinda thinking about the same.

What about a deposit?

Here is what I did. I raised a few Cornishx...enough for DH and I, but ended up selling a few..@ 15.00 ea. They ranged from 6 to 8 pounds processed. This was to get the interest out there. Well...Now I have orders for more...so I will get between 25 and 50, the first part of August...I will take a deposit for half of the order. As for my Turkeys....I informed everyone who bought chickens that I will have the turkeys in the fall. They will range between 12 to 20 pounds. I will get a flat rate of $50.00/turkey. Everyone seems to be thrilled. I again, will take half the price up front as a deposit. It is a NON REFUNDABLE deposit, unless I can not produce the birds.( predators, or illness) If THEY back out, they lose the deposit. I have orders for 10 turkeys....I just hope I can get them all raised to a good weight by then! LOL

Good luck on your adventure. It CAN be profitable...if done right. Oh...and I call mine... " pasture raised" Seems to spark the interest more.

justusnak, I was thinking about charging a flat rate for my RB turkeys, but what if there's a great range of weights? It doesn't seem fair to charge 50 for a 12 lb and 50 for a 20 lb. Just trying to think this through...

I was kinda thinking the same, but all of my cc's dress about the same-- within about 1/2 lb. Shouldn't the turkeys do about the same? Sure does simplify things to just have a flat rate. Thanks for all the great ideas, I'll be discussing them with dh and determine what we'll be doing.
