This bbw turkey poult is 1 week old. The kids just noticed the other turkeys picking at it's hind end, so that's the reason for the blood. It seems like it's a swollen vent, no guts or anything...and I just watched it poop. So it's like its distended or something. For now, I have it isolated and have given it vitamin water. Anyone have any experience with this? It doesn't appear like it's anything that needs to be pushed back in or anything....it just really looks like it's just swollen...

Ideas??? Suggestions???

Anyone have any experience with this?

I haven't had to deal with this myself but I think you are right in seperating... you may find that after it is left alone for a few days that the swelling may go way down and there may not be too much of a problm. Not sure if you should put something medicated on it or not hopefully someone else will comment on that. But for now you could always put a dab of vaseline or a lubrication jelly just to be sure any more poos slip right off and out to keep the risk of infection down and make sure the area doesn't dry out/crack/end up with liter stuck to it, etc... as it isn't normally exposed. Once the swelling goes down you may be able to assist a small amount of tisse using either of those products... just a gentle massage may be all it need to go back in place. Good luck and remember blood always makes things look worse than they USUALLY are! A gentle warm(not hot) rinse under the tap may in order before adding some more vaseeline.

Yeah, I thought about putting something on it, but decided against it. I really want a clear view of whats going on with that little toosh.

The turkey is not fond of being by itself at all considering that it had 14 other friends in with him, so a care bear and stuffed beanie baby are now doing the job of the substitute companions. The blood has dried and it looks ok, other than the fact that it's protruding/swollen so we'll see what happens overnight.

Well I went back out to check on the little poult and it's doing fine. However, another poult has a bloody vent!!

So I put it in the isolation cage with the other and looked for the culprit (s). You know, the ones with the bloody beaks. So I found 2 birds with bloody beaks. I marked them with some blue kote for easy identification and just started watching them. It turns out the smallest, tiniest bronze poult is deliberately bending over, looking at butts and pecking them-repeatedly. I think the other one just was going after the "brightly colored thing" that it saw. But I have those 2 butt peckers isolated as well.

I hope they outgrow this soon!!

I hope so too for the remainder of your flock.. good detective work! Not sure really what to do about the butt pecker though. Guess you could try to put them back together, try to find it a new home or make an early cull if they can't figure out how to be nice to the others. Hopefully the instigator doesn't turn on it's partner in crime. You might try putting one of those chick logs into the brooder (although I'm not sure if they are ok for turkeys, or not?) or maybe something else brightly colored like some marbles, plastic ball or something shiny like a cnning lid from a string... maybe one of those would be more interesting than their companions butts. Good Luck!

Separate them and clean them up with some soap and water, saline or sterile water. If the vents are protruding and bleeding, apply some triple antibiotic ointment or vetericyn. Watch to see if they are drinking and eating well.

For swelling you can also apply some hemorrhoid cream or honey.
