I was cleaning my chicks and turkey cages today. I have chicks and turkeys 1 to 5 weeks old. I have been battling mites in the hen house and since the chicks were hatched under the hens I put permethrin garden/poultry dust in their bedding. I used my hand to shake the bedding up a bit after and continued onto the next cage etc. I got to the turkey cage and they were out of water so in the excitement to get at at their newly filled water they kicked a bunch of wood chips into it, (I did not powder their bedding with permethrin) but without thinking I used my fingers to scoop the wet chips out. 5 minutes later the 9 turkeys one by one began peeping in distress and falling over, bobbing their heads as if they had lost their equilibrium or were drunk. 2 of them lost all function and crashed in the corner 'passing out' but still breathing....

All I can think of is I had permethrin on my fingers and POSSIBLY residue from my poison ivy ointment. I have been battleing a horrible case of poison ivy (nearly 75% of my body and face is covered) I have been using a spray containing calamine 8% and pramoxine 1%. I am freaked out thinking I poisoned my birds.... will they recover??? from what I have read peoepl have used products with pramoxine in it on their chickens wounds ( I am assuming they hadn't ingested it tho) and I am not sure the toxicity of permethrin or calamine, but I am feeing like an idiot and hoping by poor baby turkeys come out of it ok....

advice?

The next morning the turkeys were fine. Out of water again, I filled it and they drank it up- only one did a weird head bobble and started walking backwards but after a minute he was fine (I definitely had NO residue on my hands this time and the waterer had been cleaned. So not sure what to think. Can drinking cold water too fast do this? no episodes at all since....or prior- very strange!!
