Turkeys are already very closely related even if they aren't from the same brood. Many people get their turkeys by buying siblings. It isn't the best way to start but many get away with it and others are always wondering why they have so much trouble hatching turkey eggs and why so many of them have hatch related and genetic related problems. My relative bought the tom and hen from the same person at the same time, so there's a chance they are related. Ok. She hasn't accepted him yet. He still is trying to get her to accept him she appears to be annoyed by him right now. It is always better to try to source a new tom from a different (not sibling related) flock.
It is also not a good thing to just have one hen for a tom. I try to keep at least 4 to 5 hens for one tom as it greatly reduces the wear and tear on the hens.
It isn't currently breeding season so there is no reason for the hen to accept his advances at this time. Breeding should start in February followed by eggs in March.Ok. She hasn't accepted him yet. here's a photo of him trying to impress her.. He rotates twirling in circles like a.. Iceskater or a ballerina, so its difficult to capture tom![]()
Is this true no matter the region? It isn't currently breeding season so there is no reason for the hen to accept his advances at this time. Breeding should start in February followed by eggs in March.
Turkeys are seasonal layers. Breeding starts in the spring and egg laying ends in the fall.Is this true no matter the region?
I'm in central Florida. Tropical climate, but it's the amount of light, not the temperature that causes them to breed, or not to breed. Correct?Turkeys are seasonal layers. Breeding starts in the spring and egg laying ends in the fall.
Some people provide artificial lighting to get their turkeys laying in January. It is not uncommon for very early eggs to be infertile due to insufficient hours of light for the toms to have fertile sperm.
Amount of light is key but I have seen breeding season delayed (this past spring) by unseasonably cold temperatures.I'm in central Florida. Tropical climate, but it's the amount of light, not the temperature that causes them to breed, or not to breed. Correct?
