Turkeys For 2013

What happened with these 2 young poults was they were born a day apart. I now had 9 poults born 2 weeks from first to last. I think that one of the last got run over by the older, bigger ones. His eye was swollen and he kind of gimped around. (He had been fine) So, I took the 2 smaller ones and put them in a tote, 2 thermometers checking the warmest and coolest spots. I put eye antibiotic ointment (not sure if it was mine, dogs or cats) around the swollen eye. I wasn't seeing either of them eating or drinking, so I got a tiny eye dropper and started soaking some of the chick food and fed them with the dropper. I noticed that they started to gasp and sometimes the liquid would get on their little nostrils. Within 2 days, I think they had fluid in their lungs, induced by me. By the next day both were dead. I feel horrible typing this out but if someone else reads this and says, ohhh, and rethinks the process, then it was worth the agony rehashing this. sue

Celie, I sent her a long email documenting our conversation on yesterday yet AGAIN offering my help and still no phone call from her.

As someone mentioned about sending a care sheet, I think I will now type information and give it to customers who buy eggs to incubate. I hate to see the baby birds suffer because of someone's ignorance.

I was going to invite her to join BYC but if she doesn't have time to have a conversation with me about caring for poults, the I know that she won't have time to register and log on to BYC to read, study and learn.
Ignorance is just the lack of knowledge, Stupidity is the inability is the inability to learn, this person is both of these and also rude, with lack of common sense, too. When you make up your sheet, please post it? I think we all have customers like that!

If anyone has any advice to put on the sheet, I'm sure would be welcomed. I'm not sure if the person that first said she was making up a care sheet ever did. I know enough that turkeys take longer extra care than chickens

Watch out when the eggs hatch, Fred, for the emails, my girls will be sending to your poults, informing them about you!!! LOL What, your name isn't FRED? Well they both start with an "F" and you're not wearing a name tag.

Alright Carrie I will be looking forward to seeing those emails the girls will be pecking out.

Actually observed my royal palm hen lay her egg today. I went out to her what she thinks is hidden nest to collect her daily egg, and she happened to be there, so I knelt down and waited. She hissed at me several times, then suddenly started this purring trill punctuated with little clucks, and her wattle turned very bright red. She positioned herself up like a chicken, pushed several good times, and out slid her pretty speckled egg. She sat on it for a few more minutes before getting up and yelping to find the tom. I have 5 of her eggs under a wyandotte cross hen right now on day 7. I have 5 more I'm getting ready to put under a broody silkie. If all these hatch I'm going to multiply my teeny flock of 2 very quickly!

How can I tell if the bronzes I have are standard or the BBB. The sign said Bronze, and I presumed they were BBB

Last year I had some Heritage Standard Bronze next to some BBB and the only difference we saw was that the BBB legs were double the thickness and grew twice as fast seeing that they would only eat out of the feeder. Where the HSB were more friendly and loved to forage in the hay field.
These are very friendly 4 week old's and are about twice the size of the chicks of the same age they are in the brooder with. Will they free range or forage well if they don't have access to the feeder part of the day? Do the HSB live longer since they don't weigh as much or are they also not a breed that stay alive for more than a year?

Of the 4 fertility check eggs I locked down one hatched this morning, one was zipping and one had pipped. I hope I come home to at least 3. The other is slow but I'm still hopeful.

This is what I have incubating right now.
