I caught one a few months ago, hammering down on one like her beak was a hammer and the egg was a nail. She shot out of the chicken house when I saw her, so I can't remember which one it was. I know the color of my egg eater (light brown) but I don't know which "light brown" one because I have quite a few that are that color. Which is why I am trying my experiment on this weekend when I am outside cleaning the coops. Whoever joins the bandwagon will be dealt with accordingly. I can't have any chickens that are impressionable now can I?

And she hasn't seen mine either KG, yep I did see one of my NN girls do the same thing, it was one of the white ones and I've got a good many white ones so I don't want to get the wrong one.

Put my turkey ( an its best friend a EE) in the coop yesterday!!!
Turkey- left EE-right

My poult also scratched the top of his beak off( I don't no how he did but its not deep just took of the "skin" if the beak I guess)

Chuck and Rosie. I've hatched 12 living. 3 look like Chuck 5 look like Rosie.

Rosie now lays her eggs in my pile of wood ash. (Along with an orange peel)

I have to hens and we have been wanting a rooster to go with our ladies. how much would you be asking for them, and could you ship them to alma Michigan?

Still here reading the thread, wonderful information and so many amazing pictures! I had bought 20 BBW's for my first try at turkeys this year. Oh my, they are just little sweeties! Love neck rubs, and one little tom is already displaying at 3 weeks old

Looking ahead to heritage and can't make up my mind. I do like the Holland's, I want a large bird. But i also love the colors. Porters birds are very attractive.

I don't want a hatchery bird either, but they have so many choices... ugh. Decisions.... I want a flavorful bird that's cold/heat hardy, friendly and colorful. (Don't we all!) I do know we will be raising turkeys from now on, what sweet little souls and so social! I love the new sounds I hear them make, their voices change daily. My youngest, who is 20 and "all girl" even likes them, that's quite a challenge. She told me last night "its weird. they follow me." I told her they trust her and just want to be friendly. So she plopped down in the grass, and they perched all over her! She didn't even care that one pooped on her shoe!

There is hope for my girly girl yet

I like my Auburns from Porters. THey are a fairly large heritage bird and very very pretty. A ligght chocolate brown is my best description. It is not and APA breed, but an old breed and needs more breeders. I got all toms. So I'll cull down to 4 toms and get another batch of poults and hope for a few hens. THey have the Hollands too. If you want pouts this year, be sure to get your oder in asap, they will run out quickly, so keep an eye on their page.

Be careful about making friends with what you eat--- many cannot eat them thereafter--been there done that. :) I have a few BR toms running around because I cannot eat them, so they are in the breeding pens this year.

I was curious for those of you who have raised BBWs and other heritage birds, I loved the personalities of my BBWs they were my favorite and even though I tried not to bond with them they made it very difficult. My Bourbons are nice too but I was looking to add another type of turkey with a calmer laid back sweet personality. I like the look of the white turkeys how do a midget white or a holland compare in personality, or maybe a royal palm?

I don't have any issues with my BR--even my grain delivery driver who was afraid of turkeys for good reason ( shildhood exerience) loves my BR. My boys come right up to visitors , turn sidewasy, loft the head and use one eye to examine the visitor. What a hoot. I would be surprized to find any turkey calmer than my BR. Guess that is the difference between lines.

This sounds like a question for S andS Poultry. Try looking back thru his/her posts as they often comment on the particulars of these breeds. THey raise 6-8 kinds of turkeys.

Quote: IT is what it is.Years ago, I bought a lovely 6 m dog and could never bond to him.

Sweet dog. My next dogs I did bond with totally.

I always felt regrets about the first dog, and he was great with my kids. I have a pict of him with one of my boys.

I do wonder if the age that we enter their lives makes all the difference. I hatched the poults and I got my next dogs at 8 weeks old or sooner.(born here)

The over hang of my jakes beak got broken off too. I saw the pic of the poult and it reminded me. Will it grow back he won't eat bread and when he pecks its almost like a dog being told "gentle"

My turkey is repeatedly pooping out just pure water u guess- its a classic poop but its clear like water... He's eating an drinking but drinking ALOT
How old is it? Mine that are in the brooder box urinate or pass clear water in their grit, which I haven't directly seen, but saw the wet grit after it had been done. But if they are too hot the poo gets more watery and they drink an excessive amount of water. Don't know if that helps or not but hopefully someone more experienced can comment
