So I want to do a little experiment, I have 42 eggs and was going to try to see the difference in hen raise vs person raised. Can I take some of the chicks I'm nervous that they will be super afraid. How can I make them as friendly as store hatched chicks? :?

Its not about where they are hatched, its about how they are raised. If you want to raise a couple in the brooder just go get them after a day or 2. The poults will never know the difference.

I raise all my poults inside my house, shhhh don't tell anyone, and they become very used to us picking them up and talking to them and use going by them. The next best thing is a place of their own where you can visit them between feeding and watering. WHat I mean is, spend more time than just the moments for feeding and watering.

For comparison, I have had chicken broodies raise chicks and they are hard to catch as adults even; fortunately the broody was a chick I raised so I had some contact with her brood but she usually was gone by sun up and not back until sunset so I didn't get much time with them and it shows.

Thanks guys. If how long should I wait till I "steal" the poults? Can I get them tomorrow morning?
Do you have a brooder set up????

I took chicks in batches, several at a time and only those that were flufy and dry. When I took the last chick, I took the hen to the hen house and returned her to her friends. Done.

The only time I let broodies raise is when they have guineas that I am going to keep. The broodies teach the keets to come into the barn to roost at night and alot of the guineas lay in the barn as well. Cute as it is to see broodies out and about with babies, we dont feed our free rangers alot. To encourage them to forage. That means I either have to set up a creeper for the chicks/poults or bring them into the brooder. The brooder is easier for us to deal with than creeper training.

I sold that last of my 7 baby poults to a guy. Kinda sad but I know they went to a good home. I still have the 1st hatch and I doubt if I sell those. I kinda like those little critters. I have to tag them because they are as big as the older turkeys and I almost can't tell them apart.

I have a new bunch of miracle Red Bourbon Poults that have started to hatch 6 In the Fowl Spa AKA the spare bath tub and one still in the Incubator attempting to hatch. I had one that had a big piece of egg shell that would not come free so I soaked the Poult in warm water for a couple of Minutes and the shell came loose no harm to the Poult. The reason I call them miracle Poults is that we had a bad storm go threw the same night that Oklahoma got hit and we lost our power for 14 hours, I started up the generator and it died after an hour and would not restart so they got very cool for for several hours. I also have two Red Bourbon Hens trying to set on one nest of eggs at the same time  between the two of them we will see how things turn out. Here is a picture of the new Poults in the fowl spa sorry for the quality of the picture the red heat lamp does not help when taking pictures.
Looks good! :thumbsup

Funny how they grow and for so long we know which is which, then that day comes when the doubts start. Time to band! lol
