Turkeys For 2013

I saw a minimum was 8 for BR.

Actually, Porters explains that the number in () is the max number of that type of turkey available at one hatch.

From the Porters page:

Quantities:

The number in parentheses "( )" after the price of the poults indicates the maximum number of day olds available at one hatch. You can order as few as one of a particular variety. If you want more than the maximum number, you will either need to place two orders from two different hatches. Or contact us to see if we may be able to make an exception and fill your request in one shipment

Hmm. This put me in a bit of a situation. I know others were wanting the BR as well. I may just have to order my own and get 15 poults. Thanks for pointing that out. I hadn't seen that until you said something.

Thanks for that explanation as well.

Is there a different order minimum for different breeds? For the BR it's only 8 minimum.

Which breed is 15 min?

Its my understanding 15 is the min order.  Doesn't matter how many breeds so long as it totals 15 poults.

Ok. I will have to go back to the drawing board to think about what I should do. I may have to find someone in my area to split an order.

Which breed is 15 min?

Minimum purpocahse number for shipping is 15 poults

EACH breed has a max number. SO to get 15, you will t need to order 3 breeds of turkeys. Which is why they need a list of subs. A least there is a chance of getting what you want.

I got a few Narrigansetts in my sub list . . wow I really like them. I'm liking all the turkeys I have . . .

but I cannot feed them all long term.

Very hard to deside what to keep. THe sweetgrass are gorgeous, but would sell them. THe narris are gentlemen in grey and the two boys are best buds, so how can I do in just one and leave the other lonely. THe bourbon red are eye candy.

I am emptying the freezer of lesser valued foods like breads, frozen watermelon, and fozen meals. I wish I had a better way to store dried milk replacer and bran so the pantry moths can't get into either.

I need a third freezer!!!!!

I've been canning this summer and can can more ( 24 qts empty and waiting for a job).

I'm ready to make jerked meats to put in my kids lunch boxes--- so hard to get fresh foods into them --

With the cloud cover and the smell of rain, I asked DH about a weather reaport. DH told me weather was only a cloudy day, no rain until next week.

IT is raining . . .

Even if you get all boys-- consider keeping 1-2  because the next order could be all girls. Or if you try to hatch some BR eggs and you might only get a few to hatch , they might be all girls.

My last hatch was all girls . . . . .until I realized that a week ago, I was ready to butcher my extra tom . . .now he is not so extra. Just saying . . .

What is the minimum number of poults from porters, 15??

Yes, the minimum is 15.  Several of us from the Indiana thread are putting in an order to save on shipping and to meet the min requirement.  I have the space for 15 but really didn't want to get that many.

I have read lots of posts regarding keeping an extra rooster/tom.  I don't want to be stuck so I will keep at least 2 toms.  It would be perfect to get 2 toms/4 hens. (I really need to learn the terminology for turkeys lol sry)

I may have to work on finding someone to split an order. Not sure I want 15 poults and I only want 1 breed, so I'm in a pickle of a delimna.

It would be nice if they offered 15 of any one breed. I do think when people try other breeds they get hooked on them and that helps keep up the interest.

Queation for all--- how did I get black palm from mixing narri, BR, auburn and sweetgrass? I know sweetgrass is a palm base so that is probably in the mix . . . .just trying to figure out why some are only black and white and others are tricolored. THis is very confusing.

Double yolk from the bigger egg. Man those shells and membranes are hard. I broke the yolk on the smaller egg. Can anyone tell if these are fertilized? I think it is, but not positive. Thanks
