Turkeys For 2013

Hey everyone. I did bumble foot surgery on one of my Toms this weekend and I have a lot pics. They are graphic though. I didn't want to post them in the event someone has a weak stomach. If anyone would be interested in seeing bumble foot on a Bourbon Red Tom, let me know and I will post before and after pics.

My tom is recovering inside and will be for probably a couple weeks. This time it was MAJOR surgery.

Let me know who would be interested and I will post the pics.

Anyone else experience bumble foot with any of their turkeys?

Not with my turkeys, at least not heritage turkeys, but then my oldest is only 3 years old. I think you said somewheres yours were 5 years. I have with the BBW's and meat chickens that were just too fat to carry their weight, so I needed to cull them anyway. I would love to see how this is done, because I am sure eventually it will happen, since it is so common! I have a meat chicken, Meyers October Cornish Rock Cross going on 5 months old that has it. I was going to cull, but really think I should learn how to do this. Things are so much easier to learn from people who can show you how to do things, instead of just reading about it in a book! Please do post all the pictures you can, if not on La-ers, then in a turkey thread that is marked Graphic, so no one with a weak stomach has to watch! I don't understand why, when we start to describe something as graphic, people don't stop watching, or would click on a post about doing surgery or slaughtering if they didn't want to see them, but go figure? :smack

Thank you for that tutorial and the pics Kuntrygirl. I am going to check my boys feet out. I can't believe how calm your tom is for you. Good boy and good mama.

I put 6 Turkey eggs in the bator with 30 chicken eggs yesterday. I'm am doing a fertility check of one of my pairs. I started getting eggs from my Royal Palm trio. When I have six eggs I'm going to do a fertility check of those. I ordered another hovabator 1602n this morning.

Going to set goose eggs in that one.

Well, since what you could not get out from the bottom, came out at the top, so at least this time looks like you got it all! How old is this tom? I have noticed bumblefoot only in really fat meat birds and BBW fat turkeys. Is it caused by walking on hard uneven surfaces, like a stone bruise to start with or is it like a corn is in people? Since the birds that I have had with it, were meat birds and not breeding stock, I just processed them before it got bad, but I have a big Cornish cross meatie with it, so I am going to practice on him and If it looks like I am hurting him, I will stop and process him rather than let suffer. I can't stand the fact that I would causing anything pain. It doesn't seam to have stressed your tom much though and before I have to I had better learn to do this right! Thank you so much for the lesson and the pictures. I feel like I have really learned something today! Is Epsom salt all you cleaned it with and did you bandage it? I wouldn't want the bird walking on poop with an open wound, but to walk on it bandaged might be a worse exposure to poop. I guess that might be the reason I have not tried that before? Birds walk in all sorts of things.

I am not afraid of much, but when it comes to causing someone or an animal pain, I am a big coward!

Do you anesthetize the area at all? Is there anything to give for pain? Just curious...

OH ON!!!!!! So sorry to hear that. That burns me up when I hear of predators killing birds. So Sorry.

Thank you...he offered to replace her...gee thanks...it was a nice gester, but it will be hard to replace that hen! :( I am going to have to start all over with new poults...and we all know how that goes...

How did you get your turkey to be still? Did you numb the stop itself? This is the 2nd Bumblefoot tutorial I've watched. How does it get so far advanced or does it not present itself until far along. I don't inspect every bird regular but guess I should. I'd hate to have to take one out. I can't see any of mine being so still. Thanks for posting the pic's. sue

You are welcome. Yes, he is s real sweet boy. He is the oldest of them all.

Good luck with the all of the eggs that you put in the bator.

I hope you have a great luck with the goose eggs. I'm nervous about mine.

I looked at my records for his age and I thought he was 5 years old but I think he is older than that. I can't find my first records of him. I think he is probably 7 years old. He has been around a long time. He has been through so much poor thing and he is still kicking. He is my favorite turkey. :)

I understand about stopping if it looks like it's hurting him. That is what I was afraid of as well. If they flinch, then it is definitely hurting. My tom wasn't stressed at all. I have been through this with him for a couple of years, so he knows when his feet are hurting and he needs relief. I think that's why he lets me do whatever I need to do to him.

Yes, I let him soak in Epsom salt. That was all. I didn't bandage it because I have him inside on a large comforter in the laundry room. It's a clean environment, so I chose to allow it to get air. I do check on it and I spray the spray that I got from the vet. If he were to go outside, I would pack the hole and dress it like this (see pic below) and become creative by putting a protective material on it so that it could not get wet or absorb water or poop. For the most part, I allow him to stay inside up to 2 weeks until I feel comfortable with the healing.

From a previous surgery.....

I'm nervous too, even though I've hatched before I've got a wait on 32 goslings so I REALLY need good hatches.

I do not anesthetize the area. As someone stated, it's like the corns on our feet. It's a VERY hard dead skin knot, so I use a new razor and gently cut the area around the scab. I'm not sure if there is anything to give for pain, but I will research to find out and post the answer. Good questions.:)
