Not sure on the breed... my step dad bought the parents at an Albuquerque flea market.... very beautiful. Guess I'll have to wait n see what they grow into;) carried ten eggs home to california and eight hatched, super happy about that. Four are yellow and four chipmunk striped!

Mstricer - very pretty turkeys!

Arielle - I guess I gave out too much info. lol. What I was wondering was, typically, how much does a turkey eat in a day. I've read that chickens eat 1/2 cup per bird daily that has the freedom to free range. I wish I had tried to check this out when I had them. Thanks, anyway. sue

Sally, I have read alot online trying to learn more about raising turkey and it seems like I read in one article that a grown turkey will eat a pound of food per day.

They are adorable!

Celie that is where I am at on the turkey! The pens! May I ask what size your turkey pens are? Right now I only have one hen and 4 toms. But hoping to change that around soon! lol I don't know what size to make my pens. I was kind of thinking 20x20 for 4-5 hens and 1 tom. I may use netting over the tops of the pens for the grown turkey.

I would think that is about right for pen size--- ANd definitely cover if you want to keep them IN. I put up horizontal poles and 6 feet is no feat for them to get over. lol Actually, it slows them down a bit, more of an effort than 3 feet but Give them about 10 minutes and everyone is OVER!!

Otherwise you know, bigger is better-- or have severl pens to alternate and let grow up again??? THeir feet are as destructive as chicken feet. THe chickens scratch and the big birds stomp the grass to death.

Just my experience so far!!

Thanks Arielle, I Knew they would not stay in the pens. I have seen them fly up and hit the top of my hen run trying to get into the trees.

Yup.

My young ones roost 20 feet up, or try too! THe older birds are put in a 8x8 barn and locked up to keep them safe as they don't roost very high and are easy pickings.
