Turkeys

Yep. I can't wait to try our first homegrown turkey! I am contemplating injecting it with "stuff". How do you all prepare yours?

aww so glad to hear you think Bourbon Reds better than store bought! Mine are 4 months old and Ive been worried I might ruin thanksgiving using them as the main dish! I also want to process our 6 month old quails for thanksgiving also. Did you do anything to get them "ready" for slaughter - like fasting them or anything??? I took them off the medicated starter last week and put them on the adult game feed. This will be our first "home grown" turkeys!

We don't raise turkeys (no birds as of right now as a matter of fact), but, it is fall turkey season, and if anyone in the household bags one, yer darn tootin that we'll be eating turkey, lol.

I didn't do anything special before they were slaughtered. A little feed was wasted but the results were delicious! I can't wait to make soup out of the rest of the bird!

I'm pretty attached to our Turkey. She'll probably stay a pet now-not so sure yet though...I just know that next year, I CANNOT let them follow me everywhere!!

lol on the following you everywhere! I cant keep mine in the pen and they fly over to greet us at the door as we walk out. My DH was working on his truck and they all got up on the engine and were "helping" him! He doesnt want to get rid of any either! We have 3 males though and 2 females. The males are fighting sooo bad, I want to thin them out before they kill each other!

I think I may try it next year. Compared to chickens, how expensive is it to keep turkeys and at what age is ideal to butcher said turkeys?
