i put my 8 week olds up on the roost last night. they stayed right there all night. trying to train them with the smaller light. they scwabbled a little but finally calmed down.

I put my 6 weeks olds out last sunday night. All I did was put a flashlight in the coop. They pput themselves in the night before last and last night when I turned the flashlight on they went right in!.

DH and I have a heck of a time getting them back in the coop. Maybe it's because we put them in "before" sundown???
I did buy those little round lights that you put in the closet. We don't have power out there yet. Do you think we are having a problem putting them in because we are doing it too early????

So long as it's not too hot in your coop, try locking them in the coop for a few day with no access to the outside. This should train their little brains to go into the coop at dusk to roost.

I am having a real problem with that. I checked the thermometer and at the hottest part of the day it got to about 100 degrees in the coop. So I had to open the door. I ordered a little exhaust fan that is solar. It should be here this week. Once I get that installed it should get a lot better in there. Once it does can I still close them in for a day or two or will that be too late to train them???

Yes, I can understand why you wouldn't want to leave them locked in the coop.
It won't be too late to train them but I have found the longer they have a habit, the longer it takes to break it. My chickens were in their first home (our screened porch

) for over 5 months. It took a full two weeks of them being locked in their coop before they got the message not to come to the screened door at night and to go to the coop instead.
