Turning a large water tank into a chook coop?

Not if you use something like this... https://www.google.com/search?q=sol...vvcDXAhVLLyYKHX5nAKcQsxgI0AE&biw=1280&bih=893

ETA: How rude of me... this is going to be an interesting project... I need to hang out and see where you go with it.
they're expensive though, no way I can just pocket out for that. the whole idea of this coop is to spend as little as possible. has anyone got preferably free good roof ventilation designs? I've read its important in summer as "When manure breaks down, ammonia fumes are released, which, when breathed by chickens (and humans) can cause respiratory distress" so y'know... also good methods for buffing down tin, so I don't cut myself when going through the door in future?

Get your tape out there and measure ;).
Is it open on one end?

What is your climate?
Putting your location in your profile is very helpful,
easy to do and then it's always there.

Cutting metal takes certain tools and skills.
I find it much harder to work with metal than wood,
harder to fix if you screw it up.

I'll bet that tank is rather thick walled.
Angle grinder with cut off wheel might work,
with grinder wheel to smooth cut edges,
sawzall with metal cutting blade might easier for major cuts.

Cutting doors, windows, and vents is 'easy'...
...protecting those openings from weather infiltration and predators
is another story. You'll need the right fasteners and a good roof with adequate overhangs.

its enclosed on both ends, I have an angle grinder but not a sawzall. on the windows I plan to have thick mesh plus keep the cut out bit to make a smaller door on the windows, so I can lock them up at night to prevent predators.

x2 what aart said. You could build a pitched roof cap with overhanging eaves and bolt it to the top to protect ventilation from rain. Also using a diamond blade in an angle grinder or sawzall will make cutting it easier. For sharp edges, use old garden hose in which you've made a slit and attach with construction adhesive. With a little work, that tank will make an awesome coop!

I would make a roof structure for it, think pole barn... then you can open it up for ventilation. Does it have a round man hole on top?
it does.
Gary
you would probably be safe cutting your vents into the sides up high and covering with wire.
do you mean like a really narrow opening from top to bottom?
