Hi there,
Wehave a 7x10 metal shed that is approx 6 ft tall sitting on a concrete slab . WE were thinking of turning this into a coop...with access to a run outside . We live in Indiana would the metal building get to cold or hot during the seasons? The shed is in the shade most of the day in the summer time . We have 10 baby hens right now about 1.5 weeks old, The coop area will be approx 7x7x6 Thank you for any help or info

We also did this. We have used this for over 3 yrs now and it works fine. We also put up a fake front so it matches our other coop.

most birds do fine with the cold assuming the roost is flat enough so their toes don't freeze. Its the heat that gets them. Since yours is in the shade just make sure there is a vent at the top & keep the door open when you can in the summer & they will be fine.

If you find later you have an issue - you can always add rigid foam insulation to the top - but the metal roof should reflect most of the severe heat away.

You can do it but will need to insulate heavily, including the ceiling, so that it does not become excessively humid from condensation/frost in the winter (which will give the chickens frostbite at fairly mild temperatures). Also you will have to cut a bunch more ventilation in it, including ventilation that is usable during wintertime.

Good luck, ahve fun,

Pat
