turning my old pool into a chicken pen is old sand under it safe?

I am planning on turning my old 15x30 pool into a chicken pen using the deck as the frame and was wondering of the old sand under it is safe for the chickens? I keep reading conflicting information. If it isn't safe do you think it would work to rototill it in with the dirt underneath for the floor of pen? An info would be appreciated.

I don't know about the sand, but I would love to see pics of the finished coop! I'm always looking for ways to recycle junk into something useful!

Why would it not be safe?
I'm assuming the pool is the above ground style with vinyl which sits on top of a sand base? Are you removing the vinyl?
