TV reporter in Vancouver BC interested in Urban Chicken movement!

Thank you Giddyup for your advice from Duncan. I will check with them, and get back to pushing my Mayor and Councilors.

I must stop procrastinating writing a petition. I have read a few others, and they were really good, I hope I can do nearly as well. I am so happy to have your support chickenbike and ilovebluesky. I'll let you all know when its ready.

Unfortunately dodgegal79, the bylaws in the city of Surrey allow chickens in the city, but only if your lot is one acre or larger, which doesn't help most of us regular working class city dwellers

Thank you again you guys. I'm always interested in any ideas or thoughts that you might have!

What a conscientious mom and citizen, keep up the good work! My biggest hope is that there a lot of moms and people out there that feel the way you do. I am also very concerned about the same issues, and I am lucky because my work takes me into all aspects of the sustainable agricultural, horticultural, and food world. I recently learned more about BC and Surrey's commitment to support these values and practices. I met yesterday with the folks that presented this paper and topic to the Surrey Mayor and Council, and you might want to read it and/or see how you can be involved. I'm really excited to be a part of it myself. Lets all be part of the solution!

Sorry everyone, I'll hop off my soapbox now...

Hey Everyone!
chicks have sure been in the spotlight lately. I was recently forwarded this message and petition, I really hope it all gets passed!

City Council is considering amending the bylaw to allow people in Vancouver to keep chickens in their backyards! But they need to hear from all of us to ensure they understand the sheer volume of support.

Please email the mayor and city council to let them know, and feel free to use the following sample email. Here is a link to the email addresses of the people you might want to email:

Dear (mayor or councilor's name),

I am writing to express my wholehearted support of chickens as part of our urban landscape here in Vancouver.
It has been brought to my attention that the City Council is considering amending the bylaw which currently prohibits this,
and I am pleased to know that such a progressive leap is being undertaken.

In a time when global food shortages, poverty, and access to healthy food are real and serious issues, I believe it is
imperative for our bylaws to be amended to reflect a more sustainable civic attitude towards food policy.

Let's show the rest of the world that we are a global leader in urban food production: that we as a city take pride in
putting the power to provide for ourselves back into the hands of each citizen.

Chickens are far quieter than any of the barking dogs in our neighbourhoods, would be protected by the animal
cruelty laws already in place, and would provide an opportunity for low-income individuals and families to provide
for themselves.

Please show your support for a more sustainable Vancouver by including chickens in our urban food system.

Thank you,

(your name)

I am in White Rock - I have kept 2 chickens and a duck for a year in my backyard. I recently got a complaint and now the by-law guy says I need to get rid of them.... Thoughts on how to fight this?

Thanks, Lora

PS - should I keep them in my backyard while this gets resolved - or should I move them until this gets resolved? (now that I know this is illegal)

Thanks!

We did!
We will!
We have!
We do!

Do you live in the Vancouver area? Do you have chickens?
We plan to celebrate Tuesday, if all goes well, and you are welcome to join us!

I have just joined this site and admit I have not looked at the FAQ or other parts of this site before leaving this message on this thread. I am very upset by the idea of allowing people to keep chickens in their backyard for egg laying. I'm hoping you will be able to ease my concerns by your replies or I will find an answer once I have done a little more research.

All of you here are in support of keeping backyard hens in the city, but have you thought beyond the known benefits such as improved food security and decrease in gas emissions? I am talking about the obvious problem of chicken neglect that is inevitable. We have thousands of abandoned dogs and cats being taken care of by the SPCA, private rescues, and volunteers and I believe by allowing backyard egg laying we will be adding chickens to the rescue list.

What do you propose to prevent this from happening if urban chicken keeping is allowed?

I am looking dor 3-6 Australorpe hens. Does anyone know where I might find some? I live in South Surrey.

You might want to look at the C.I.T.Y. - Chickens in the Yard web site in Salem, Oregon. Lots of info on how to proceed with attempts to change poultry-prohibitive ordinances. If you google it the web site will come up.
