My RI RED just started laying 2 weeks ago and I have been getting an egg every 1.5 days. This morning she laid 2 eggs that had extremely thin shells. One of them broke as I tried to pick it up. Is this typical to have a chicken lay 2 eggs at the same time? Is it understandable that those two eggs would not be fully formed? All her other eggs have had nice hard shells.

Yes once in awhile you will have a chicken lay two eggs in a day, being thin shelled is comin seeing as they have to put half of the effort it to one egg as they would usually put into one egg

Pretty common with new layers.
2 on same day are often both thin or soft shelled.
Takes up to a month or so for things to smooth out.
