Two and half week old chicks.....they STINK!!!

I put mine in my coop at 2 1/2 weeks. They are separated cause I have 3 month old Wyandottes with them. Here's a pick.

Yes, but a person asking questions about Chicks with only 9 posts usually only has chicks, as does this poster.
I just recently joined BYC...I have owned chickens for several months now and my oldest ones are about 4 months old. And yes I may not have older ones as most people on here but I joined to learn and ask questions from people who have more experience than me. I did not ask this question to start an argument, I just wanted others opinions on putting little ones out at an early age That’s all.

Oh you don't need to worry about that comment, it was directed to someone replying to you. Please feel free to ask questions or concerns about your poultry. Were all here to learn. :D :caf

I’m in middle TN and I recently moved my 4-day-old chicks into the coop (no other chickens) with a heating plate (Iwas inspired by posts on BYC). Actually I put the whole brooder in the coop and fastened the brooder door open. Temps have been highs in the 80’s and lows in the 60’s. I’ve adjusted the heating plate a couple of times as they’ve grown so it’s in a higher position, and the only time they go under it is at night. Some of actually only go halfway under it. They are now 15 days old and doing great. They spent most of the last 2 or 3 days in the covered run, exploring. taking dust baths, pecking at grass and dirt.
I know that Louisiana is hotter and more humid than TN. I plan to remove the heating plate in another week or 2. I realize that they will not be fully feathered yet, but there are 8 of them and they will clump up to sleep. Plus it will be July by then, for heavens sake. I have shredded hemp in the coop and it makes a very cozy bedding. I may put a big flower pot or basket in the coop (turned on its side) when I remove the plate. since they are used to sleeping underneath somthing.

We live in Southeast Tx so our weather is probably similar to LA. Our chicks are 2.5 weeks old right now. We put our brooder in the covered run (no other chickens) from the start. After the first week of them and the ducks pretty much spilling water everywhere we decided to just let them have the run. It's fairly secure and pretty much nothing can get in or out for that matter. We just put a large box inside the run with no top and cut an entrance hole on the side and placed the heat lamp up top to be on only at night and on rainy days. They can go inside the box to dry off and warm up if they like. At the end of the week we are going to start locking them up in the coop at night and letting them out during the day.

I agree. They can probably stay outside just fine because of the temperature, but you need a heat source at night. When the sun goes down, the temperature drops phenomenally. You don't want freezing chickies! But if you want to be extra safe, please wait till they have feathered out a bit more (wings, and maybe some chest too). But yea, chicks can be SO dusty lol

I guess im over protective of my babies. I live in upstate ny and my babies stay inside til 6 weeks. I want to be able to check on them at all hours. They have a light on for at least the first 2 weeks. On nice days i take them out to play in the grass but I have a ton of predators so I want my babies safe. I have 13 babies in my brooder and as long as I change them every day or at least every other they don't tend to stink. I use large pine shavings on top of puppy pads. Never any dust.
I am too and even with my older ones!!! Being over protective is just being a good chicken momma!!!!!😀

Thanks for that....it did feel it was directed to me but I just overlooked it!!!
As I said I’m new to this forum and just been reading and learning from experienced ones and was getting answers. The only reason I started this thread was cause I couldn’t find the answer I was looking for.

I’ve decided to just leave the little fluffy butts inside for now cause Mother Nature is being ugly right now!!! ☔️ RAIN!!!!
