I discovered this by accident. If you have two black rubber bowls. Fill one of them, let it freeze solid, turn it upside down, fill the other bowl with water.

Next day, the upside down bowl will have absorbed enough heat that the ice block falls out of the bowl, even in very cold weather, today the high was about 15 degrees. We have been well below freezing for the last several weeks, and this has worked like a charm for me, saves stomping on it. With two bowls, one can be watering the chickens, the other, thawing.

I'm new to chickens but I love the black bowls I use them for my dogs for years I did however make some waters for my chickens that stay thawed until single digits I took a metal pan sit it on a stack of bricks with a light bulb under it. I then took a five gallon bucket drill a hole in it fill it up put a lid on it and flip it upside down in the pan. made a 5 gallon waterer.that's heated for around 10 dollars beats the 50$ ones at the store
