two chickens killed by our dog :(

i have a aussie too. a rat terrior, and a mutt also... they will let the chickens/chicks crawl on them. lol! they were taught, at day one to completely ignore them, they arent even allowed to look at them. my aussie just like any other aussie is very very possessive, protective. if the chickens walk past her bone or something she thinks is "hers" shell bark reall loud and run at them.. but its because i worked with her..

however, she hasnt ever killed one, none of my dogs have, or even acted like it. once she has killed she wont stop. my dogs are inside dogs,, is your dog a inside dog? because i wouldnt want ur dog tied up all the time..

but seriously, shell keep doing it. when she did that the first time i would have beat her soo bad!

We have a lab-chow mix who was WAY too interested in my new chicks for a while before we trained her to leave them alone in the yard. Her first instinct is to chase anything she thinks she could get to run ( incl. cats, chickens, other dogs), but I kept taking her out when I could monitor her as they grew bigger. When they were little, I would hold them and invite her to "look but not lick"… if she got too excited I sent her to sit down. As they grew and began to roam part of the day, I gave her a verbal "bark" sound and "NO" every time she went to follow them. Now they just pass by each other in the yard with little interest on either side. I hope she would protect them if something came in the yard while she was out there. I have more issues now with the chickens thinking the local stray cat might be edible.

I think since your dog crossed the line that you might consider tying a dead chicken with something really bad tasting around the dog's neck for awhile and taking her out on leash near the remaining chickens, rebuking her every time she shows interest in the birds. Then try some fun training time with her with treats and toys so she knows there's much better things out there to do that will get her your approval and some praise and yummies. Over time I think you'll fix the problem.
