Hi all,

I got three chicks from Meyer hatchery about a week and a half ago - I was actually supposed to get four, but one was dead in the box...I don't know that it's related (guessing probably not) but I figured it would be worth mentioning.

Other three chicks (blue/black splash orp, lavender orp, swedish flower) were doing great all past week. Just last night I was handling them/checking them out and they were running around, interacting, doing great.

This morning the swedish flower hen was dead and a family member found the blue/black splash before it died - she said it was having seizures or convulsing, couldn't keep its eyes open or even lift its head up, just laying there - and it was dead very shortly after.

The third one, the lavender orpington, is still alive. We recently had another chicken (completely separated, so I do not think it's related) need veterinary care; we couldn't figure out what the issue was so the vet prescribed antibiotics. We're 90% sure that chicken's actual problem was mites, which we treated and she's improved.
All this is to say, we had antibiotic left over so we've gotten this lavender orpington chick to drink some of it today. We've also been giving her electrolyte water but are going to get some proper nutridrench today as well. For food, we have gotten some egg yolk into her, and that's it so far.

Most of the time she is sleeping, I have her wrapped up in a cloth so she doesn't have to fully support herself because she doesn't seem to want to lay down. When she's awake, she can stand but falters, peeps a lot, and her eyes close frequently.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be and other ideas to treat it? I have no idea if this third chick will survive, primarily because i don't even know what the problem is to begin with - but the other two died really quickly.

They were vaccinated for Mareks FYI.

What is the climate where you are? Is a chicken vet located in your area? I would probably take the remaining chick to a vet if you can.

I really don't know what's wrong with her so would recommend that, keep her warm and keep giving her water. You may want to tend to her overnight.

Just an update to this post two weeks later -

It was really bizarre. After keeping her warm and giving her bits of antibiotic, nutridrench, the whole works, she completely revived after less than 24 hours and has been happy and healthy since. I still don't know what to make of it. It is possible the other two died from the cold, as apparently they tended not to go under the brooder at night; as such, we've been making sure all of our current chicks (including the survivor) are going under at night, and they've all been doing great.

I don't know what deaths due to cold would look like, so I'm not sure if that's what it was or if it was something else.

Either way, I'm so happy she's doing well.

Glad your chick is doing good :) I don't know if that's what it was, but the cold is a killer! (Winters are especially brutal...)
