We have a 20 month old leghorn that's always been a star layer. She had a respiratory thing not long ago though and vet put her on amoxicillan for 10 days. We've been giving probiotics the whole time as a precaution. She hasn't really laid since the antibiotics, but has been acting totally normal. Today for the first time ever, she laid a soft egg that had clumpy white stuff on and in it. It doesn't smell yeasty, but should I assume that's what it is? Any ideas? Should we just go ahead and treat with miconazole either way? We have another one that was on antibiotics too, should we just automatically treat for yeast after any rounds of antibiotics?

It may be some sloughed off material from the Oviduct, hard to tell.

I would start her on probiotics instead of treating with Miconazole.

See if the material continues to appear in the eggs, if it does, see if your Vet can run a culture.

Generally if there's a yeast infection (Vent Gleet), there would be a yeasty discharge coming from the Vent.

I'd also start her on 300mg Calcium Citrate+D3 for a week. Give separately from the antibiotic.

Sorry, I looked back to get dates straight. We gave her antibiotics for 10 days then started giving probiotics around day 8 and have continued for about 3 weeks now. Should we give her more than one a day? I didn't think about the vent with the gleet. That looks normal.

No, I wouldn't increase the probiotics.

You may want to go with the basics. Fresh feed, fresh water. Make sure she had Oyster Shell free choice. For the soft shell problem, I'd still give her 300mg Calcium Citrate+D3 once daily for a week, see if the quality improves.

If she had a respiratory illness, these can affect production and the reproductive system. So you may find that quality is poor for a while before you see improvement. Long term effects of respiratory illness may not be seen until she gets older (Salpingitis, EYP, etc.) but depending on what she has, the illness may not have any lasting effects, you never know.

I didn't fully consider the respiratory illness being a factor. Thanks for reminding me! Can antibiotics be a cause of egg issues too? I guess I'm just so used to her being so good that it's just extra weird. We are doing the calcium plus D and do have lots of oyster shell available along with the clean feed and water. We'll just keep doing that and keep an eye on her. Thanks for the reassurance on what to do!

Possible medication may affect shell quality. Respiratory illnesses can greatly affect the reproductive system, so hopefully in time as she recovers, quality will improve.
