Hi Everyone, please help me, I found one of my Faverolle chicks dead this morning, the only thing I could find wrong was a tiny amount of red blood around her vent. No damage to the vent though, and the vent area was otherwise clean and dry. Now, a few minutes ago I found another one that was in the corner all sleepy, and I picked it up and brought it in. I couldn't find anything wrong with this one either, until I looked at my hand and saw a tiny smear of clotted blood. I carried him inro the bathroom, and put him down and he started seizing. I picked him up and watery blood was dripping from his vent and he died in my hands...

1. Salmon Faverolle almost 4wks
2. Described above
3. Sudden, see above
4. Just these two so far
5. Blood coming from vent, no signs of trauma
6. They were let out with the older chicks yesterday, their first day outside.
7. Eating and drinking normal I think
8. Poops have been normal, no messy bums
9. None
10. I need to know if this is a disease, or if they may have eaten something, so I can save the rest of them, and protect the rest of my flock.
11. I can take one if somone wants one...
12. They are housed in a shed, wood floors, on pine shavings. There is an adjoining pen of older chicks, and some adults. And my adult birds come into that building alot too. ( None of my other birds are sick.)

Definitely cocci. Purchase Corid 9.6% liquid solution in the cattle section at your feed store. Dosage is 9.5cc's per gallon of water for 5-7 days. It must be their sole source of water to drink. Make it fresh daily. You can make the 1 gallon mixture and put it in their waterers if you wish.

Heading to the feed store now. I assume I should treat all my chickens? I have two month old chicks on up to adults all running around together.
Also how can these chicks that have not been outside or with the others get cocci when the older ones havent shown any signs?
It hit so fast, fine, then dead, no warning

I could only find Sulmet drinking water solution. It is 12.5%
Per label instructions the dosage for chickens is 2T/1oz per gallon of drinking water for 2 days then half that for 4 more days.
It also says:
Following administration directions below, this will provide a recommended dose of approximately 61 to 89 mg/lb/day body weight in chickens, depending upon the dosage, age and class of chickens, ambient temperature, and other factors.
These chicks don't weigh a whole pound yet, do I have to adjust the dosage?
I did not know they could die from Cocci before showing symptoms, and I just cant see how they could get it! I cleaned out the pen before putting them in and it has never been wet. The hatch before these is living in the adjacent pen and that one has been wet, and they are fine? It's scary.
And I read something about adding powdered milk to their feed will help the mortality rate. I know I need to follow this treatment with probiotic, so I got some of that too. I also read to give electrolytes, but do I mix that into the water with the Sulmet?
Thank you

Ok, I found a bloody poop in their pen, so I gave them the Sulmet according to the directions. I hate to without any advice, especially since I read on here it is hard on them and doesn't work on some strains of Cocci and I hate to treat them for nothing. If they have one of the types it doesnt work for it will have run it's course before I can give them the corid (I ordered some online). I also gave them dry milk with their food because I read somewhereon here that was what people did for chicks before Sulmet. I hope I have not made things worse for them, but all I could get for advice on it was old posts that said it is better to use the Sulmet than do nothing, but is it? I just have such a bad feeling....
They all seem hale and hearty, though I found some definate bloody droppings.

Typically dosage is an approximation anyway. The amount of medicine the chicks get will depend entirely on how much water they drink. Smaller chicks drink less, bigger chicks drink more...so dosage is automatically adjusted by si2e of chick. As long as you mix the quantities of water & medicine powder properly they will be fine.
