After waiting all summer for one of my hens to go broody, I now have two that have gone broody in September! Is this unusual? Will the chicks do ok with the hen caring for them going into October and November? We have fairly mild winters here on Whidbey Isl., Wa.

My very first broody hatched her chicks in late October. Granted, this is the South, but we certainly have winter days that do not go over 50 and plenty of below freezing nights -- sometimes the water in the dish is frozen solid. They did great and were out running around midday at three days. Mama can keep them plenty warm. Even baby chicks, it seems, tolerate some cold better than heat.
