Hi Guys,

So I've always wanted a couple of chickens and so a freind of my partners had to get rid of theres due to selling off part of there land. So anyway I've taken on two Isa Browns and I've already learned a lot along the way.

Firstly I had such little time to get a chicken coop that I bought some flat pack job from a hardware store which cost me $250 australian dollars. Anyway this was a mistake, it was made of thin cheap wood and now I pretty much use it as a glorified nesting box. Anyway I went on to build an enclosure(2.4m sq) as can be seen in the pictures which funnily enough cost me only $200 and I've since built a little coop as well, and added a run (about 2.4mq also). So in summary these are probably the most expensive eggs in the world but hey live and learn and they are great little characters.

One thing I don't get is that initially only one of them way laying then they both started and now just one again. I have used a lice powder on them and a wormer in there water so I think its just a case of waiting and natural cycles. It only gets down to 5 deg C in Melbourne in winter so I don't think I need heating , do I ? I use pine chippings as bedding and it seems to work great. Oh and they seem to love Weetbix !

Chickens lay when they are good and ready so, as long as they are healthy and well fed, you just have to be patient and wait. Your girls are known as sex link chickens, a hybrid, and once they start laying, they are egg machines. I hope you're enjoying yours as much as we do. Good job on fixing them up with a decent size coop and run.

Thanks for joining us!

THanks for the info, it's good to know there not too cold, I'd read they were good down to zero so just wanted to confirm.

This forum is a great resource for newbies like me !

Love the pictures of your Bantams great shots indeed. Tell me I was thinking of eventually moving from my two birds to possibly 5, can you mix bantams with bigger chickens like mine or is it best to stick to one breed?
