Hello,
We are located in Suffolk, Virginia in ZIP Code 23434. We have two Sapphire Gem hens (Karen and Nashville) that are about a year old, very pretty and are consistent layers of brown eggs. We also have Sadie, who is our matriarch at 10 years of age. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago Nashville decided that Sadie is a detriment to the flock and has made it her goal in life to take her out. Karen has been a little bit aggressive toward her, but obviously doesn’t have the same goal. I’ve kept them separated for the last 30 days, but it has not affected Nashville‘s behavior towards Sadie. Except for Sadie, they are friendly and get along very well with everyone else.

I breaks my heart to do it, but I need to rehome them both. I could probably keep Karen, but I feel like it would be good for them both to be together in a new home. Our chickens are pets so that’s just what I feel like I need to do.

If there’s anyone out there in our area who would give them a good home, please let me know. Many thanks!

Did you want to try any thing like pinless peepers or sanding the beak of the aggressor down (it grows back) so they connect aggressive pecking with not pleasant feelings? They can still eat though. I have also read putting vapor rub around the areas that the bully grabs at also makes them less likely to attack because it tastes so nasty.

No worries if not but if you haven't tried these, I thought I would mention them.

There little plastic things that block a percentage of vision to the front of them (because they see to the sides of them as prey animals.) pretty cheap. Maybe $13 online. They have small plastic prongs that you use a tool to stick in their nostrils. You can have them in, conventionally for up to two weeks, but some people have reported having them on for much longer.

You can look up videos. It's an anti-bullying tool for chickens. We bought some but didn't realize they seem to only come in adult size so our bullying teenage chicks were too small to use them. But yours should be big enough.

No worries. I completely understand. I wanted to also offer the suggestion in case you had to recombine their pens while waiting to re-home. I hope Sadie feels safe and secure now.
