Two questions:

1. I may be hatching out my first blue scale quail. How long do the babies need to be under the brooder lamps?

2. In the meantime, I'm picking up some coturnix from the same fellow I got my blue scales for. I'll be getting 2 males and 4 females. Can these coturnix stay together or do I need to have them in two separate cages for each male (with two females)? Thoughts?

TIA.

Chicks need heat until they are fully feathered which is about 6 weeks. Start the temp at 97 degrees and lower the temp by 5 degrees for the next 6 weeks.

You will need to separate the groups of Cots. I think if you are only getting 4 females, and 2 males, you might want to only get 1 male. 1:4 is a good ratio, 1:2 is not. Males will run the females to death. So you might want to get 5 females and 1 male instead. If you want 2 males, get each male 5 females.

X2 , I figure Leyla is right on the money here... If you crowd your birds and chance chill'n them. You can cool'em down a bit faster. Some just can't take it... The ones that can will feather a bit sooner, sometimes I chance it, sometimes not. If you really value the birds alot , follow Leyla's advise here...

With the cots, sometimes even with 5 hens and 1 roo, all the hens will be rough look'n in a few months... Cot Roos are worse than teenage boy, just gotta rub it on somethin!! Bill

x3 on both of them. especially the cots.

i use to run a 1:4 ratio and sometimes the males would just really like one specific bird and she would get torn up. so even at 1:4 you gotta keep an eye out and make sure someone isn't getting the grunt of the blow lol.

Blue scales are new world quail as are gambels, valleys and bobs.. Coturnix are old world quail. Really apples and oranges. The differences between two are extreme in both breeding and personality... Bill
